| Hi guys, during the riding season I noticed a sheen of oil on the crankcase. I couldn't find any leak anywhere in the usual places, ie, drain bolt, dipstick or oil filter. I wonder where the tiny bit of oil is coming from. I rode the bike home, about 90 miles. I was taken by the beautiful shape of the bike and failed to do the obvious safety checks before riding. I took the owner's word that it was maintained very well, and it showed. However, I went thru the usual inspection and noticed an overfill in the oil. I drained the excess and continued to monitor. The level hasn't gone down even after several kms of riding, but that sheen and tiny drop always shows up. It coats the bottom of the crankcase. I can't find an obvious leak anywhere. Any ideas? The bike performed well all summer.
Thanks, Jay. |

| The most common leak area is where the stator wires go through the cover. I had a leaking water pump seal many years ago that would leave a oil drop on the floor after a long ride, replaced pump good since then. Pump can leak oil or coolant two seals in there. Stator is on right and pump on left you have to crawl under there and take a good look. |

| If it's just a light misting it will most likely be from where the stator wires pass into the casing, it's a common thing with these bikes. There is a fix involving removing the stator cover, a bit of googling will find a utube vid on it, but whether it's worth the effort is another matter. Mine has been doing it for a few years now and not getting any worse, if it does I'll fix it. |

| Thank you, guys, for the replies. I read about the two seals in the stator area. I am not having issues with it right now, so, I will hold off and keep an eye on it. I did not notice any change in oil level, so, it is ok.

| It sounds like the infamous stator wire grommet. My SW used to leave a drop of oil on the garage floor. Since I've been replacing the oil regularly it stopped dripping but I still have the coating on the underside.
If you're not that concerned about the issue just leave it. DO keep an eye on the oil level though. Mine does require a tiny topup occasionally. |
