Clean the drive belt? Empty
PostSubject: Clean the drive belt?   Clean the drive belt? I_icon_minitimeSun Apr 28, 2019 5:42 pm

I have a 2012 Wing with 6,400 miles.

I'm going to install Dr. Pulley 24 gram sliders.

While I have the drive belt off, I'm wondering if I should clean it.

It looks to be in great shape except for one mysterious little nick on top. However, I inherited some long-dried oil residue in the belt case from the previous owner. One theory: he or she inserted too much gear oil and it seeped into the case. It was mostly on the floor of the case, and not up near the pulleys.

I googled "clean a scooter drive belt" and came up with a couple articles on using basic dishwashing detergent and a Scotch Brite pad, then letting it air dry thoroughly. Can't see how that would hurt.

Anyone have experience in this area? Gracias.

Mike

The bike is 7 years old---get a new belt.

If it was a 50 cc puttputt, I'd chance cleaning it as suggested. But, with a 600 cc beast, I would prefer to replace as John suggests. It also has a nick on top, all the more reason to get a new one.

Jay.

As long as you have it off, replace it. Better to be safe than sorry.

Install a new belt and save the old one for a spare. Don't wash the old belt. Just put it in a two gallon Ziploc bag and store it.
