Engine difference 2001-2016?

Has the engine remained the same all these years or has been any updates??

Example: Can I use 2001 cylinder+head to 2009 bottom engine?

"There is no parts information available for the 2001 model here in North America. However it appears that all years use the same cylinder. There are a couple of different original part numbers for the cylinder head --even within the same model year. But what the difference between them may be is unknown. Could be that one cylinder head part number will substitute for all those original numbers. Could also be that the only difference between, say, a 2016 head and a 2003 head is nothing more that mounting provisions for ABS or Emissions hardware. 

I'd kinda bet that a 2016 head could be used on a 2001, but a 2001 head might be more difficult to use on a 2016.
