Good advice, something else I've seen, buy smaller HP work your way up, even better buy a dirt bike and learn. True or not I don't know but " overseas " one has to start with smaller HP and work up.

Yup. My first bike, WAY back when, was a Montgomery Wards Riverside. It was a 125 cc two stroke that would only do 55 downhill with a tailwind. I ended up trading it for a Ducati 350 one lunger a couple years later. My third bike was a brand new Yamaha RD-400 twin two stroke. That bike was awesome. From there it was a Honda CB 750 Japanese model. Then a 1980 Yamaha 850 triple. And now my 08 SWing which I really like.

My wife and I took a trip to FL on the 750 and two years later on the 850. Those were some fun trips!

I did all my reading about motorcycles on this site. Very informative, for seasoned riders and novices alike ! On the subject of starter bikes, I'd say that you should consider the maturity of the novice rider when recommending a starter bike. My VLX 600 was perfect for me. At 57 I had a healthy respect for the beast, but a young whippersnapper would have cranked it way beyond his capability and got in trouble.
