I have a Class C that is 29-30 feet long. It currently has a class 3 hitch rated at 500 lbs tongue weight. We now have a swing and I'm wondering if its possible to carry it on the back in some sort of hitch mount.

Id like to set it up so that I can carry it on the back rather than use a trailer that can be difficult to back up straight especially with a good amount of distance between the rear axle and rear hitch. I can probably upgrade the hitch easy enough to a class 4 and I think the chassis is more than sturdy enough to handle the extra weight. The chassis has a 9500 lb axle from what I can research. We normally run with empty tanks except for fuel and propane and dont carry that much stuff.

There are carriers that are rated for 600 lbs, but some feedback I've gotten is that the back of an RV is a rougher ride than the back of a pickup. I know its not just a static load but proportionally its not that much (600 lbs) compared to the overall weight of the coach (about 14000). I've thought about beefing up or making a carrier that uses either 2 or 3 mounts to the hitch rather than just one in the center. If anybody has done this or has information on it, I would be all ears. Thanks in advance.

Bob

Eviltwin

Highly recommend the mototote.  Www.mototote.com. It is rated for 600 lbs. i

It is rock solid and easy to put on and off. I have a 31 ft 20000 lbs ford class A chassis. The mototote is a  bit pricey but it is definately the best in class. I sustitute periodically with a two bike CCM carrier which works well if i do not want to bother with scooter - 2007 silverwing.

Depending on coach you might want to add airbags if weight affects steering. I found there is no handling difference. Also carry a cover when wx gets nassty to save cleaning bike.

Easy one man on and off and i have no problem taking on and off myself. I did a lot of research and wanted to avoid a toad, trailer, or lift. This way taking a bike is a ten  minute option. I tend to park along a curb and load it from the sidewalk. Makes slope a little less when loading. Utube has  good video if u do a search.

Sure is handy having a scooter to ride around and go shopping if the campground is isolated. I dont have pics but can take some if needed when i take out the motorhome next time.

You can always add a second receiver if you feel the bike flops around too much. I use an additional  device that locks the receiver with the hitch, it fits over both and uses three bolts to remove slack. Not sure of the name but can look it it up if you cannot find it.

Hope this helps

Bob

I transported silverwings and other bikes behind several of my motorhomes, The only caution is the added width at the rear of the coach while maneuvering.

The added weight about 600 LBS Bike and My custom built drive on off ramp did not adversely affect the handling of any of my class A coaches.

Happy motoring lloyd 193. swing

I currently carry one behind my Holiday Rambler class A diesel pusher. I use an overbuilt lift with a double receiver. Have taken my wing from Canada to Cabo San Lucas in mexico and back. Never felt it influence the handling . One man on and off.

Do you think that there would be much of a difference between a class c and a? So far everyone that has responded has an A.

Rather doubt it...........
You are dealing with a vertical load on the hitch. just make sure it has the weight capacity. normally it is 10% of towing capacity. You need to add the weight of the carrier and the bike which should work out to ~ 600 lbs. Also you need to look at the capacity of the rear axle and make sure there are no other added items that would take it over the limit. To be safe , or if you are in doubt, you could take it to a scale and measure rear axle load.

Based on your hitch you are 100 lbs light. Take the coach to a hitch place and ask them to reinforce or do whatever it takes to bring it to 600 /650 lbs capacity. you might find putting in a second receiver (of any description) could stabilize the load and increase the capacity of the carrier. It could be bolted to the carrier. probably welded or bracketed to the frame.

Far as handling there shouldn't be any difference. Difference between class a or c is really just weight and/or wheelbase. I certainly don't even notice it is there.

if you use two receivers then you can probably get away with a cheaper carrier. In the end it depends on what value you put on your scooter ;>)

just make sure it approved or installed commercially and let your insurance company know you are carrying a motor scooter. You don't need to generate an excuse for the insurance company not to pay a claim......

sure better than booting around with a TOAD.

There is one guy selling a carrier that he builds that he rates for 900 lbs and requires a class 4 or 5 hitch.   This is his website: http://www.motorcycleracks.net/index.html.    I think the issue really comes down to whether the frame can handle it or not.  His opinion (yes I know about opinions) is that most rv makers are pretty conservative about how they rate their rigs for towing.  Where some rigs have have extension rails added to the chassis, this one has the rails that go all the way to the rear and that is where the hitch is bolted to. In this case its a class 3 with a 500 lb tongue weight.  There are other hitches available  that are class 4 and would also bolt up just as easily.  The difference in the weight of the carrier with the scoot vs the rated weight is about 150 lbs and I have a hard time believing that 150 lbs is going to make all that much or any difference on the handling or affect the structure of the coach.

Just my opinion but.
Anything that asks you to drive your scooter up a ramp is a bad idea.
