I would be interested in this idea. I think the key is to use a PM to contact others in areas where you will be traveling. I'm sure others have been members of these type of lists and can give us their opinions of the pluses and minuses. Like all things the devil is in the details.

Need some way to sort members by location. This function is not currently possible in the "Members" section. Then again, members who would like to help would need to make certain that they have entered their location.

As a member that just went through a situation that this list would have come in handy. Not necessarily to come pick me up, but just to point me to a repair shop. I called a friend back home to look on the PC to help me.
I believe most if not all members of this forum would be anxious to help someone broke down in our neighborhood.

The BMWMOA (BMW Motorcycle Owners Assoc) publishes an annual book called the Anonymous with nothing but phone numbers and general location of people willing to help stranded members. Of course, BMWMOA is a dues supported organization. I've not been a member for about a decade now, so I suspect that this info is now available on-line.

I'm wondering (for privacy reasons) if it wouldn't be equally valuable to have a list of "known good" shops we've frequented... That way, if a rider did have a breakdown, they'd have something readily available that would help them know where they'd be able to go that could at least spell Honda FSC600. :-)

The GWRRA (Gold Wing Road Riders Association) publishes their 'Gold Book' annually, which is a rather large listing of people willing to help, exactly as per this discussion. When you join/renew, you have the option of being included in the book or not. It is a dues supported orginization. They aslo have a section for 'Gold Dealers' which have to be recommended by members as a good place to go when out of your normal stomping grounds and dealer services are needed. They handle the privacy issue by offering the opt-out policy. You are not listed unless you want to be.

I'm niot sure this is much help... It's been a while since I had one. I know someone who is still a member... I'll see if he has one I can look at.

First off, a rescue list is very simple, theres no membership, or publishing, or anything like that.

Everyone who has a truck, or trailer, and is willing to rescue a downed rider has to share their phone number, usually in a pm or email or whatever. If your one of the above, list your name where you are, how far out your able to go get someone, people pm you or text for your number, and then put it in there cell phone, taa daa, you got it now!

True. But a rescue list like this is very loosely put together. It involves only the members of the forum, like this one. Not anyone who goes down anywhere in a given area. Its like this
"hey if anyone needs themselves and there bike dragged out of a ditch, call me"

You have it exactly!

Rules of rescue.
Rescuers
Dont put your name in the hat if you aren't going to actually help someone.
If you ask for money, your an a-hole. If someone offers it, well thats a good thing!
If you are unable to rescue someone, help find someone who can.

Rescuees

Understand that any given person may not be able to to drop everything and come get you. Its not a moral obligation.
running out of gas is your problem, not a rescue.
same thing for flats. Plan ahead.
Only ask for a rescue when your ride is incapacitated wrecked, or absolutely wont be going anywhere with being hauled.

I have not forgotten about this. I thought it might be helpful to provide an update on the "investigation".

The software for the forum has the ability to create Open Groups ... which means that each member can decide if they want to join each Open Group themselves.

To demonstrate if you go to the blue bar above and click "Groups" then a new "Join a Group" page will appear. On the "Join a Group
Which group would you like to join ?" click the pulldown to the right ... click on "Open Group example" then click on "View Information" then a new "Group Information" page will appear. If you click "Join Group", then a request will be sent to a moderator who will have to approve your request.

If you look further down the page you will see a "PM" button for the group which would allow a member to send a "PM" to group".

We could create an Open Group for specific regions. Each regional Open Group would have their own forum section which will only be visible when you join a regional Open Group. In the forum you could post pertinent information ( Suggested service centers, Contact information if you choose, Travel problems ).

If have access to the internet or a "remote" phone buddy who does have access to the internet and regional Open Group ... they could PM the group for assistance.

I would be very interested in any thoughts or suggestions on this.

That still seems to complicated and more like a travel guide. This is how we've done our recsue list. Its worked perfectly for 10 years now.
