600 MILE SERVICE QUESTION?

I did the 600 mile service on the Swing and part of the proceedure is to inspect the Steering Head bearing. I took off the cover of the handlebars and there wasn't much I could see or do. Has anyone done this part of the service and if so could you enlighten me as to what I should be looking for? Your assistance will be highly appreciated. Thanx.

Doesn't the dealer do the first, (600 mile), service free in the States? We pay for incidentals only here in Blighty, oil, etc. Labour! the major component in any bill is free.
