Making Plastic panels Quiet Empty
PostSubject: Making Plastic panels Quiet   Making Plastic panels Quiet I_icon_minitimeThu May 12, 2016 11:09 am

Recent trip to Mich UP-----cold morning----lots of panel shaking on bike with over 30,000 miles. I don't like the noise.

FIX: On both sides near glove box----drill super small holes, two each side, use tiny self tapping sheet metal screws. Result shaking noise gone on morning start up. I don't mind drilling holes to fix

Honda uses hard plastic on panels, my BMW same=easy to break tab etc.

This fix works for me.

Drill the super small holes exactly where? Do the screws secure panel-to-panel and, if so, which ones?

Please post a picture so I can see exactly where to drill. Thank You in advance.

I do not take pictures or send pictures. I am rider not computer geek. both sides near glove box---you can see panel free play---close off with tiny screws.

Would that be one screw hole at each glove box, or two screws along the side of each (or one) glove box? I assume that you are attaching those screws in the area between the glove box lid and the side panel (Front Cover). Is the idea to secure the side panel (Front Cover) to dash (Inner Box)? If so, what does the screw attach to on the side panel?

I had some small gaps and resulting rattles there, most likely due to broken tabs underneath. Instead of using screws I have used color matched silicon sealer in those gaps. Squeezed the sealer into the gaps and then pulled it tight with some small ratchet straps around the whole front and left for a day.
It worked like charm, looks a damn sight better and eliminated most of my front end rattles.

Of course now my SW is in the bike repair shops and it will be interesting to see what sort of job the experts will do with the panels.

Probably depends upon how much silicon sealer they have. :lol!:

[quote="john grinsel"] one screw might work, too.[\quote]

But where exactly does this screw or screws go, and where do they anchor?

goes where there is panel free play---pull panel out a little make sure your hole will go where there is something for screw to catch.---this is crude repair, but works.
