I've already talked to my mechanic about it, he swears it will work. I have about 2k left on the rear tire I currently have, but after that I plan on moving over to a car tire simply based on principal. Manufactures of motorcycle tires could do more to increase the mileage you get out of a tire, but it's not in their best interest, is it? Being able to go 45K sounds a lot more reasonable to me. I do almost all my driving in town, so I really don't care about being able to lean over at insane angles anyway.

http://www.discounttire.com/dtcs/infoTireMath.dos#row1

165/70-R13
Sidewall Height: 4.55
Section Width: 6.5
Overall Diameter: 22.09
Circumference: 69.41
Revs per mile: 912.81

175/70-R13
Sidewall Height: 4.82
Section Width: 6.89
Overall Diameter: 22.65
Circumference: 71.14
Revs per mile: 890.59

Difference 165/70-R13 -> 175/70-R13
Sidewall Height: 0.27
Section Width: 0.39
Overall Diameter: 0.56
Circumference: 1.73
Revs per mile: -22.22

If I get a chance I will try to check/measure to see additional height and width will work.

PostSubject: Re: 175 darkside tire   car tire - 175 darkside tire I_icon_minitimeSat Mar 03, 2012 6:44 am

The problem of moving to car tires on two wheelers is/are:
#1 Car Tire not designed for 2 wheel handling dynamics.

#2 rim/bead difference--there is SAE paper on this

And of course where does the fun go----bikes are designed to be leaned..... I am sure skillful rider would have hell of a time on square tire. Evasive moves?

I have done thru some 250-400 mc tires in the past 57 years--and over 1.5 million miles---do own tire work.

Bike tires are soft compound----good deal for slip prevention--East Germans used to make rock hard compound tires---real thrill in rain.

I do have experience with car tires on bike---once bought HD WLA with 18" junk yard car tires on the rims=almost not rideable. Also my MZ Sidecar outfit--15" 2CV tire, special rim, tube with offset valve---not legal solo nor rideable.

Another example----if car tires so great, you would see Police Depts on them thruout the world-----ever seen any? Stick with bike tires on scooter---IRC may last a little longer on SilverWing, shop around for prices big savings is doing own tire work. SilverWing in standard condition is pretty good handling bike----why do anything to screw it up?

here we go again, longer wearing versus best grip for safety, I'm with the more experienced Mr. Grinsel, will take performance and grip over longer wearing everyday. Ride Safe.

I have two comments on Honda Silver reply:

1. you must have no knowledge or care of stuffing car tire on bike rim and their in-combatability---Try 75 mph loss of air on hot/heated rear tire. Pure safety here----somebody could get hurt. Look up the SAE reference or tire maker recommendations/approvals.

2. you must not have experience/skill/feeling to understanding how a well balanced two wheel single track vehicle really behaves----SilverWing on fresh set of Honda recommended and tested tires does work pretty good as scooter.

And evasive manuevers are not limited to jamming on brakes-----so every bit of good handling is needed. SilverWing in un-altered state pretty good.

Already previously these exact same questions in your prior post John ... https://www.silverwing600.com/t1576p30-darksideyes-or-no#16819

John ... you have no experience with Darkside radial tire ... you have Darkside bias-bly tire experience. The difference between the two different radial and bias-ply are night and day. Experience Darksiders would agree that some car tires do not work well for motorcycles (for example bias-ply,"run flat") ... which is why they share their tire information and experiences.

The Silverwing handles the Darkside tire very well ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=olGqUIqevnQ ).

I even posted an article a couple months ago on this forum from an author that tried a Darkside tire ride. He was expected up front to not like the Darkside tire ... however after more miles and only subtle different ... he was surprised.

The heavy Manic Salmander Dragonfly 1 pound bar end weights changed the handling more than the Darkside tire.

john grinsel wrote:

I have no problem with evasive maneuvers, I practice multiple times each day with no problems.

Gee, for Honda Silver what is your real lifetime mileage and experience on bikes/scooters? Be interesting to hear. Annual mileages?

There is still the bead bike rims being different than car rims? Where is your answer?

I have BSc Safety degree/worked over 40 years with MC Safety issues on daily basis, even ran MC schools full time for 7 years in Japan---personal think on MC safety, don't do anything to machine that could kill you. In US with MSF trained parking lot specialists we are not very skilled as general rule----just watch HD and GoldWing riders foot paddle----or for that matter---trailer bikers at the scooter rally in AR, have seen some fall in parking lot leaving motel area-----went there last year...some had training wheels.

This car tire issue is the same as trike riders saying they are safe....20mph ok-----I have followed them in the Black Hillsat 30-35 mph and got bad face look as I went by on Helix. Never saw one chargin thru the mountains on Europe....don't think they corner very well. I suspect Car Tire on scooter, same deal. Traction is one thing that keeps us up, square tire on leaning bike is negative anyway you slice it----and has to be less fun.

If I trike my swing with a Yelvington kit, what size could I put on the front? This combination shouldn't make a difference since I would no longer be leanning. It will already have Darksides on the back.

What size on front. First question is where to you get rim/wheel compatable with car tire? EML Holland? Trikes/sidecar out fits, modern front ends aren't designed for the different stresses involved--be careful. I drove sidecars for near 40 years ---so have some idea of how front end behaves doing something in many cases it was not designed to do---exception HD or MZ/Jawa/ older BMW's. And then thinking of trike, how about change in fork trail?

I am currently running with 140/70-14 ( no trike ) ... I believe there maybe even more options.

wis-rider wrote:

If you are looking for Darkside tire solutions there are a couple of options:
1) Put a rear "motorcycle tire" on the front ( invert direction for water evacuation )

2) Put a "car tire" on the front ( invert direction for water evacuation )
I am not aware of anyone putting a real car tire on the front ( triked or non-triked ), so you would be the first. I would think the "car tire" could ride the best ( depending on what PSI you choose ), but I am not sure of the handling.

John you seem to espouse miles as the "only" experience.

I have 55,000 Darkside radial tires miles ... which is evidently more experience miles than you have on Darkside radial tires.

John,

This is the second time you have accused administrators or editing posting.

The first time your post was split into a separate thread (unedited), yet you accused the Administrators of editing.

I have not touched your post and will confirm with the other Administrators. You may have to find a different excuse.

Why, don't the Britt's use car tires on their 2 wheelers for longer mileage, well DUH, it constantly rains there, I'm sure they would prefer a true motorcycle tire that grips the road. I bet they think we're nuts talking about car tires on a 2 wheeler. Ride Safe.

Well, John I guess my experiance cancels yours, I have logged in over 45,000 miles with a car tire on my Burgman 650 (now on my third tire) and I have over 25,000 miles on my SilverWing (still using the Sumitomo 165/70 r14). I think Honda Silver has at least 40,000 miles of using a car tire on his SilverWing. This is with modern radial tires on modern bikes. There are currently over 1,180 GoldWings running car tires and a number of V Stroms (both the 1000's and the "Wee Strom" 650's) also riding on the "Darkside". This is a good indication that the car tire on the afore mentioned motorcycles (and scooters) is not statistically more dangerous than using a motorcycle tire.

Quite honestly, the whole problem for me, what irrirates me most, is the use of the childish 'Darkside' expression.
Is it supposed to introduce a bit of daring or something special into doing whatever it is?
The expression is meaningless....or, at least. one can use it to mean whatever one wants, therefore making it meaningless.
When I first joined scooter forums, going to the darkside meant changing from a geared scooter to a T&G.
Then it meant putting a car tyre on a scooter.
Today, I read on Modernvespa that someone has gone to the Darkside. What has he done? Bought a motorcycle!
I'm thinking of going to the Darkside.....I'm going to start picking my nose with the index finger of my right hand instead of my left. Rage

Mike said "I'm going to start picking my nose with the index finger of my right hand instead of my left."

Think before you do anything drastic Mike. Some hospitalization plans won't cover right hand nose pickers. Smile

Leave that darkside stuff alone until you get more data to support your choice of fingers. Wink

Really? It's the term only? I have pet peeves as well, but we have to live with them. For instance, I really disliked the term "flavors" when people discussed the "different flavors of Unix". I got over it. You can too!

This was in response to MikeO's comment <Quite honestly, the whole problem for me, what irrirates me most, is the use of the childish 'Darkside' expression.
Is it supposed to introduce a bit of daring or something special into doing whatever it is?
The expression is meaningless....or, at least. one can use it to mean whatever one wants, therefore making it meaningless.>
It is an "Americanism" so in the states when one uses the term in relation to using a tire, that's what it is called "Darksiding" just like you fellows across the pond like to smoke "fags", live in "flats", etc.

It's still childish, nevertheless.
Why disguise something one does which is highly debatable by giving it a name which is open to interpretation in different ways?

All I did was express how I feel about it - you choose to slag me off for it. You note I said 'for me'.
Perhaps I should take a leaf out of bigbird's book.

Are you telling me you don't have a nickname for cigarettes in the Land of the Free?

Anyone who uses a car tire on anything 2 wheeled is a DORK!
Now you can all slag me all over again!

Your words, not mine.
Point about Moderators noted and I refer you to my post yesterday on the same subject in another thread.

I note you haven't responded to my remark about 'fags'.
That's a good one coming from someone living in a country where the endeavours to simplify language and spelling have resulted in the substitution of 'apartment' for 'flat', 'gasolene/gasoline (take your pick) for 'petrol' and 'elevator' for 'lift' - just three examples.
You can snipe away to your heart's content; I shall retire gracefully from this argument for the sake of peace and harmony and out of respect for other members.

Hi,

As a moderator I would like to apologize to 'Dikkiedo" about some of us hijacking his thread. I am guilty of it too with trying to post something funny/sarcastic. He just wanted an answer to his question and this did get way off target.

Sorry about this Dikkiedo". So for now on in this his post here, please just give him an answer to his question. I'm not sure how long you have been on the site Dikkiedo but this subject really raises the temperature on the site. It is not your fault at all. This site is to give answers to people who post them. But for some reason this "darkside" subject is poison.

As I said in an earlier post, I don't know why that is, so I joke about it. But let's stay on topic and only answer his question and not give opinions as to why or why not use a care tire.

Thanks.

I have 18,000 miles on my car tire on my Goldwing. I bought a car tire for my Silverwing and I am going to have it installed shortly.

If you don't want to run a car tire, then don't. If you want to run a car tire on your bike, then do.... as you will probably notice is has no effect on the handling of the bike and it will be cheaper and will run for 3X the motorcycle tire. So what? Who cares?

Contempt prior to investigation usually produces an ignorant contrary position which makes for a short discussion and ends with name calling and yelling..... and threats of leaving the forum..... over and over again.

Get over knocking those that feel running a car tire is as safe as a motorcycle tire. Trying to convince me that that running a car tire is unsafe is as crazy as trying to convince me that Rush Limbaugh is not a drug using womanizer. After all, he was arrested for drugs and he has been married 5 times. Call it what you want.

I agree.

The question was.... does this tire fit...and we got a bunch of darkside naysayers jumping with their opinions that they use on every thread that has to do with car tires.

Seems as though it is pretty easy to take all of ones frustration out on another forum member because the repercussion is non existent.

I have belonged to many motorcycle forums and this particular one has quite a negative element to it. Must be a bunch of old duds that don't have anything constructive to say. Pre nursing home complaining and bickering.

You know who you are.

Pancho, Larryinseatle, a few of us were trying to lighten the atmosphere in an attempt to keep the subject from doing what it usually does on here and cause prolonged tension and name calling.

Seems to me, you may need a more mature forum or a forum where tyre specs are taken more seriously.

I personally like this particular forum for its friendly feel and the way members tend to moderate themselves but it appears even then we are too immature! (reference to Pancho's - "grow up".) As well as being too "negative" (reference to Larryinseatle's comment.)

If that is the case I will gladly bow out of ALL discussions on here. After all, reality check, it's only an internet forum with a international membership discussing The Honda Silver Wing.

As for growing up. NO.

I like being an immature 59 YO.

I enjoy a lively discussions on a Campers forum, 2 Goldwing forums and the Honda Helix forum. None exhibit such personal attacks.

I am just saying......

If can find the ignore button I will lessen my burden of some of these people.

We're all mostly old dudes on here mate, and don't knock the nursing home either, none of us know what's round the corner health wise.

No one needs to ignore anyone, or stop posting, no one needs to throw their toys out of the pram and threaten to quit either, just develop a thick skin. It's too easy to rattle off a quick reply to needle someone. It doesn't help that when these things happen it's usually started because of earlier posts about fitting those bloody car tyres.

You don't have much time left on this earth at 59 as you will be 60 shortly ..... Happy Birthday a few days early.

I have read some of your posts in the past and I believe you could end up on my Christmas Card List. You seem to be a pretty straight shooter.

I am not sure if you jumped in there beating the "only motorcycle tires on motorcycles" drum or not. Did you say that anyone that would put a car tire on their bike is crazy or stupid? If you did, then you qualified yourself as I said "You know who you are." And if you are one, so what. It is only your opinion, but to have personal attacks on a person for their choices is just useless keystrokes.

I am not here to pick a fight. I am here to share experiences on motorcycling, specifically the Silverwing and the accessories associated with it. To have fellowship with fellow owners of the Silverwing. Perhaps to actually meet other members in person, as I have on the Goldwing and Camping forums.

For example, on the Goldwing forum, when one of the members was diagnosed with cancer and didn't have insurance, the forum members started a collection and at this point it is over $13,000.

Perhaps the difference between the Silverwing forum and the Goldwing forum is experience. Most Goldwing owners have been around motorcycling quite awhile and they are better at picking their fights or perhaps they can allow others to have a different opinion without the need to attack others personally.

If you think this forum is just a friendly bunch and all trying to get along..... why are the moderators having to edit and delete so much content?
