PostSubject: Fork leak- what do I need?   Tue 8 Nov - 8:56

I just noticed a build-up of oil on my right fork and assume it's leaking. (2003 with 22k miles). I am considering installing Progressive springs. What are the wear parts I would need to replace (aside from the seal of course).

Thanks,
Jesse

I believe all you need is the seals, the springs, and fork oil.

Thanks I read it- I have rebuilt shocks before so didn't learn much I didn't already know. I really just want to order the wear parts before I tear the shocks apart.

If you use an electric impact tool on those 22 MM fork tube caps (even though they are only torqued at ~17 lbs) you can have a buddy hold on to the fork sliders with gloves. That'll save you the risk of pinching the tubes if you use a vise.

I used a ~24 inch piece of PVC pipe with a saw split about 2/3rds of the way down the length so that it would just fit the o.d. of the fork slider tube to drive the new fork seals and dust seal into place.

If you are switching to Hyper Pro springs it's probably not too wise to use the impact took replacing the fork tube caps though. You do need a lot of downward pressure to compress the new springs, and the impact tool will encourage cross threading the cap into the fork tube sliders.

Then you'll find yourself stuck on that legendary American tributary without the proper propellant Sad

I concur, no impact gun when replacing the fork tube caps with HyperPro springs.
I clamped the fork tubes in a vise by the fender and caliper mounting boss. As long as the tube is held securely, not clamping the shiite out of it, you can start the cap thread using the 22mm 6 point socket and a ratchet.
Since 17 ft-lbs isn't a huge torque load, you can then leave the tube in the vise and torque it easily.

You also need the dustcaps, not only the seals.
