| So, a negligent dealer service shop recently redid my front fork seals (cost me a fortune and took them two weeks). I got the bike home 350 miles later on a trailer and didn't ride it around too much for a while.
Now, I've put about 500 miles on it and I started hearing weird noises from the front wheel area. I figured I'd take a look at it when I got home. Noises got worse and I finally pulled over to take a look. One of the bolts from the brake caliper (#19 on the microfiche breakout, called BOLT, FLANGE (8X32)) had completely fallen out and is lost, and the other #19 was barely finger-tight.
So, a very angry letter is in order, but in the mean time, I want to get back out on the road. I bought a service manual from eBay but have no idea when I'll get it. Can one of you gentlemen look in your service manual and see what the torque values are for those two bolts so I can get it going again? I'd really appreciate it! |

| The brake calliper mounting bolts are special. They are meant for 1 time use, as they have a factory Loctite coating on them. They are 22 ft.lbs.
Because your fool dealer decided to re-use yours without reading the service manual, you experienced the results.
He was definitely negligent. It's on p. 14-17 of the manual. It states:
"Install the brake caliper onto the fork leg with new mount bolts".
The torque spec in the manual on p. 14-17 is actually wrong. They say to torque the new bolts to 30Nm which is correct, but beside it they put 2.2 ft.lbs. They made a typo, as it should read 22 ft.lbs.
The tech could have reused your old bolts in a pinch if he had loctited them. However, that's not the best method, as the bolts stretch under torque and may still not adequately secure the caliper. |
