| When I get done from even a short ride the muffler area and some of the right side is pretty hot unlike my other scooter. I have to give it a cool down before I can cover it.
The Bars on the temp gage will go to three full bars with only one left before it hit the top "HOT" area. Is this normal?

| It is normal for the muffler area to be hot, but most Silverwings I know run right in the middle of the temp range- even in hot weather. Have you checked your coolant level, fan operation sand the radiator for blockage? |

| Not yet as I just got it and have not gotten it to the shop yet. It's a 2003. I guess you could say the temp is reading at mid level. I was just wondering if this is normal.
I will be looking into checking levels myself as soon as possible.
I am still working on the oil situation.

| Dont forget that huge can has a catalytic converter in it. They usually heat up to 650 to 700 degrees! Mine runs consistently at the mark over half, and the right side pivot gets hot as well, haven't really figured out why, but there you go. Silverwings aren't very efficient at shedding heat. They look like they should, but theres alot of things blocking the path out. The radiator sheds down through vent slots under the bike in front of the fuel tank, which has a heat shield. As far as i can see, the motor its self has no direct ventilation up under the tunnel, other than turbulence from under the bike, which suprize! is where the aforementioned radiator heat goes! Fitting a dam blocker up under the frame, angled inward would go a long way to alleviate this.
So yea, they get kinda warm! |

| To answer the original question, yes, it is normal for the SWing to run at 3 full bars on the temp guage. I have ridden mine in the 40's, as well as at 110, and it is always three bars. |

| I would disagree with the title of this thread. Niether mine or my wifes bike runs hot, and it would appear that the OP's bike does not run hot. The exhaust system and muffler (silencer) does get hot. The exhaust system on my automobiles also gets hot - odd? Maybe it has something to do with all of those contained explosions in the combustion chamber? |

Actually not, Dale. It's the catalytic converter on both the car and Swing exhausts that is the culprit. The palladium and rhodium in the cat reacts with unburned hydrocarbons and oxygen. The resultant chemical exothermic reaction changes most of the hydrocarbons into CO2 and H2O, with a lot of heat given off. My LeoVince muffler does not have an embedded cat in it like the stock Swing muffler. It gets nowhere near as hot as the stock muffler. |

| OP in thread said in his second posting that he has a 2003 model. Didn't the catalytic converter show up only in later model years?

| The O2 sensor showed up after '07. Not sure about the cat. |

| The two would go hand in hand. No need for the O2 sensor without the cat. |

Not true. It would be true if the sensor was located after the cat, which it is not. The o2 sensor on the Silverwing, like most bikes is for closed loop tuning, and its very nice to have closed loop tuning. |

Not true.

+1
You can definitely have a cat without an O2 sensor. In the mid 70's, when cat converters first appeared, there was no such animal as an O2 sensor. The only electronics back then on a car was electronic ignition. The sole purpose of the cat was to chemically clean up the unburned hydrocarbons in the exhaust. Of course, that's when unleaded gasoline first appeared. But that's a story for another time. |

I don't think most forum readers here even know what closed loop engine operation is.

| My scoot starts out with one bar but before very long at all, it's at 3 bars. I kinda wondered about the heat level myself but from these posts, it looks like that's normal? That's what it's been running when temps are in the 70s as well as in the 100s whether I drive 5 miles or 50 so I hadn't worried about it much. Hope that's allright |

| Mine has always warmed up to three bars, and never more or less. Even with 8 year old coolant it was no different. |
