| I fitted the Iridium plugs today, again following the excellent guide provided here by JeffR. Although I have a workshop manual, it's much easier to follow Jeff's directions. 2 points to mention.......... 1) The tickover went up by 400rpm with the new plugs. The bike was running fine before I changed plugs and the old ones I removed looked to be in good condition, so I wonder why the rpm increase? I've never used Iridium plugs before but I thought they were just longer lasting rather than better performing? Anyway, I adjusted the tickover back to 1300rpm.
2) In "JeffR's How to change plugs" the 2 screws holding the inspection flap on are replaced by 2 tiny plastic trim clips on my 2001. I've added a note to that effect below Jeff's instructions.

| There's no reason for idle rpm to increase 400 rpm based only on a plug change. A spark is a spark. Typically increased idle rpm is caused by a lean condition, usually a vacuum leak. |

| The thing I notice with iridium is I have to give it a little throttle to start the engine otherwise no rpm increase |

| I was told the smaller electrode uses less voltage. |

My little 4 cylinder Ranger has 8 of them, 2 per cylinder, how inefficient is THAT engine! The guy at the parts store scanned 1, and only charged me for 1. 7 free iridium plugs, WINNING!
+1 for Bigbird I have had to reseat new plugs in bikes before especially the NGK iridium. So loosen the plugs a bit and re tighten to fully seat the sealing ring on the plug. I remember something in the sportbike forums about them having a bevel, or a round or something like that on them. I could be wrong about that, but i would swear ive heard of it being a issue before. Anyway, ive had to do it, so . . . . . . |

| Some spark plugs, especially on older Fords, did not use a crush washer. They could only be tightened about 1/16 of a turn. Most plugs do have crush washers. If you torque them to specs you will adequately compress the crush washer. If no torque wrench is available, then do as Tagg suggests and loosen them after initial tightening. Then retighten as much as you can using your fingers only, then add 1/8 to 1/4 turn with the ratchet. No more. And don't forget the anti seize |
