Leaking Crankcase Empty
PostSubject: Leaking Crankcase   Leaking Crankcase I_icon_minitimeWed Sep 03, 2014 12:55 pm

Greetings All,

I thought I ought to add a post about my current problem (Silver Wing 2013) in case it would be of assistance to others.

For some time now I have been losing oil (over rear tyre and onto the garage floor) with the source of the leak something of a mystery. Now finally resolved - the oil is passing through the rear of the crankcase!

Understandably the Honda dealer was somewhat sceptial initially, but has now accepted that this is indeed the case. To Honda's credit they are also accepting that they should rebuild with new crankcases. You might want to check yours!

I also have one dealer advising me that the Silver Wing has now been discontinued in the UK, and onther telling that it is soon to be discontinued.

Has anyone got any advance on that?

Regards to All

Clive

It's nice to know that Honda is standing up to your crankcase leak. How many miles are on your scooter...when did you purchase it?

With the exception of the occasional report of an oil leak originating from the grommet(s) at the right side crankcase (stator) cover, I've never seen a report of the crankcase itself leaking.

And, yes, we've been hearing rumors that the Silverwing is being discontinued for quite a few years now. Let's face it, Silverwing sales have been pretty much non existent for the last few years, and Honda is moving on with new-model maxi scooter development. That said, there's little reason to be concerned about Silverwing replacement parts suddenly becoming unavailable

Tim

Hi Tim,

Bike is 20 months old with 4,400 miles on the clock. Superb machine in all respects (except throwing oil around!).

The dealer was loathe to accept my diagnosis, but did finally agree that the oil is indeed passing through the (porous) crankcase itself.

The Silver Wing hasn't been sold in Europe for some time now - its replacement (named SW600 GT) is identical under the skin, but a bit more 'modern' in appearance.

Having ridden one in France I can advise that its stock screen is even worse than the Silver Wing's.

Personally I'm not enamoured of it and would rather stick with the existing Silver Wing model, though it's starting to look as though I might not have an option on a new one before very long.

My other bike is a BMW 1200GS which again is a fine machine, but for general use and around-town biking the Honda has the edge in terms of general utility.

Regards

Clive

Wow I've never heard of oil permeating through the crankcase on any vehicle. That would have to be one thin crankcase. Glad to hear that Honda is going to take care of the problem.
