| OK, here goes: After sifting around at dozens of sites, I've come to the following conclusions: 1) Never EVER use an automotive oil filter on your scoot! No matter how many tell they "work just fine." The eventuality is disaster. 2) All those who cut open the Fram and would never use one or recommend it: They are amateurs, at best (many by their own admission) and don't have a complete engineer's understanding of the construction. Secondly, most of the posts are 1999 or earlier - if there WAS a problem, don't you think #1 would have fixed it by now? The Fram engineer's (at one site) explanation was completely plausible about why it was constructed that way. Frankly, I believe him. 3) The Purolator MC oil filter is now made overseas and I just don't trust their QC nearly as much as I would Fram. 4) All brands have horror stories. Quite simply, every assembly line has a miscue here and there. 5) No company puts as much R&D, QC, or bets their last dollar on their product like Fram. They're cheap, they're everywhere, and they work. 6) They're orange. (Sorry, I'm from Knoxville - we're Vol fans!) Buy the Fram and shut up. |

| decide for yourself: read this study.
Look at the filter pictures: http://motorcycleinfo.calsci.com/FilterStudy.html
read about filter media: http://motorcycleinfo.calsci.com/Filters.html#OilFilters Ok vehicles are the 2nd biggest investment we have after housing. That said I keep vehicles until they are almost used up (Ex: Ford bronco 350K miles , Goldwing 175k miles). I want to put in/on the best equipment that I can afford. Thus synthetic lubes, best filters. As a result my change intervals are longer , thus less costly and better protection over the lifetime of vehicle.

| I have worked on and rebuilt countless engines in my lifetime. back in the late 50's , We would be doing a valve adjustment and scrape the valve covers off with a putty knife to remove sludge. As the years progressed the oils improved with additives and filters improved from none to toilet roll filters to can to spin ons. The engines showed improvements to sludge build up and longevity. Less engine wear was evident. Today we have some very advance oils and filter available. With use they could eventually make a vehicle that could easily out last us in our lifetime. back then if you ran 1k miles on an oil change , that was a long time. Now Oems are recommending up to 8k to more on an oil change. I would not think of running 8K on dino oil or cheap filter. I keep vehicles way too long for that. Thus the synths and best filters. Now if I traded every year or two I may be different. That said , the Swing could be my last scooter at the rate I ride yearly. If I changed it would be for style, not dependablity. I do have other bikes. OK enough ramblings. MaxB |
