If the reluctor is part of the rear wheel pulser ring, you could calculate the VSS pulses /mile. As you're an engineer I don't need to tell you about the math, but I will anyway.
1 mile X 5280 ft X 12 " = 63360 ".
Measure the radius, double to get the diameter, of the pulser ring in inches. Calculate the circumference of the pulser ring C= 3.1416 X D
Divide 63360 by the C of the ring. Divide again by the number of teeth on the sensor ring.
There's your answer. If the VSS doesn't use the rear pulser ring then this exercise was a waste of time.
