PostSubject: wont stay running   Fri Jul 08, 2011 7:16 pm

here it goes, 2005 silverwing, ran great. Was going to sell it(wife did not want to ride her own). Put i away for a winter, started it and was going to ride it to a friend to try out, bike shut down after a few minutes. When i say shut down, i mean engine , gauges , lights etc.... I tried turning off ignition and restarting, bu again no lights,no starter nothing. let the bike sit 10 minutes turn key ...lights come on,starts right up!!! Few minutes later same scenario. It is as if something is shutting down all electric to bike.

I did replace battery, checked all usual stuff ....kilswitch kickstand,brake....
I actually put it on centerstand and started it ,let it run and it again shut down completely lights, power, etc... ignored it for 1o minutes and noticed lights came back on, so i tried and suceeded to start again. same thing happens runs for a while ,then shuts down.
What is going on??? help.

Maybe a temp sensor is shot, or your charging system is fried?

Or its possessed by demons.

Trying to think it through, if it was the kill switch in the sidestand malfunctioning, the engine would die but the lights would stay on.

I'm no expert, but it sounds like a bad earth to me? (I think you guys call it "ground") If everything goes dead, maybe it's the battery ground or the main engine ground? (if there is one?)

Or possibly a fault in the ignition switch?

I think you're on the right track Goldwinger. An intermittent loss of electrical power is caused by an intermittent connection, either short to ground (earth) or loose connection in the main power from the battery. A short to ground will generally blow a fuse instantly or drain the battery quickly.

Since the battery was replaced we'll assume the battery connections are secure. Pull the left side cover. That's where you'll find the main electrical harnesses and ECU. Check all the harness connectors for tightness. If the bike quits agin, leave the key on and start jiggling all those wires one at a time until power comes back.
