PostSubject: ride to swanage   ride to swanage I_icon_minitimeMon May 02, 2011 3:45 pm

went out on the swing today to a place called swanage in dorset with the wife on the back.started the morning down the local coffee shop set off from bristol around 9.30 the destination is about 80 miles from our start of point .as we got around 60miles into the ride it started to rain and my poor wife was only wearing jeans and trainers.got loverly and wet when we got down there it was still raining and the sea was around 3 to 4 foot waves lashing at the bay we were going to do alittle crabbing much to our dismay.met another couple that were on their bikes to. had a good chat and a coffee with them found out they lived down there and we were welcome to come and visit anytime we were down there.they were both big into their bikes so conversation went well.when we finally got back to bristol the weather was nice and sunny Smile .still had a ride out of it met some new people and like the wife said.its more memories to call back on when were old,and boy we have got to many anyway.

Nice!
I love Swanage and all that part of Dorset; taken many a school-journey group there as well as spending holidays with friends.

You say the wife was only wearing jeans and trainers! Are you sure you're not riding a Harley? :lol!:

I believe "trainers" are what british folks call "running shoes." I call 'em "sneakers."

You're right we call 'em trainers over here, short for training shoes. Not that much training of any kind is generally done in them.

New Balance trainers are manufactured about a 30 minutes ride from my home, and there are a couple of Factory Outlet stores. So you see a lot of New Balance trainers and branded clothing worn not by sporty athletic types, but by overweight slobs whose idea of a good work out is shaking a ketchup bottle over a plate of chips... Now let's get this right, what we call chips here are french fries in the US, and what you call chips, we call crisps. Smile

I have been thinking of trainers here... Having raised two daughters and working on raising a wife, Trainers in my house has been early BRAs.... don't use them myself, but we have drawers full of old ones form the past. The actual term is "training bra". I never did figure out why or what was being trained. You would think someone would come up with a "training jock strap". Now we are talking about the NEED for training a young lad. At least I could have used a little training in my day. Now everything is in retirement. No training needed.

I do love ketchup on my chips

Swanage is a lovely place - not too far from me either (I'm in Torbay). I guess you've tried Lyme Regis? There isn't much motorbike parking there but it's a gorgeous, unspoilt little seaside town with the best chips I've ever had Smile

Swanage is fine, although much of the sea front area is out of bounds now for wheels. Ice cream is good.

Lyme Regis as mentioned is good, chips fair, oggies better!! Razz .

A bike friendly place is West Bay, (not necessarily Scooters), East of Bridport. Big bike park and huge turn outs on Sundays in the summer months. Although I did have a bad experience there. (sort of).

All the big wheelers were parked up, Suzi's all in a row as was the way with the Honda's and HD's. Very organised!!! My wife and I arrived on my Suzuki Burgman, parked up next to a Kwaka, the owner walked straight over to his bike, kicked it off the side stand and moved his bike away from mine!!!! (How bizarre I thought).

Wife and I then went for a walk, as we walked away from the Burgy, all the leather clad bikers turned away from us. 'Weird' I'm thinking. We had a snack at one of the beach bars and walked back to the Scooter, again, folk turned away. As we put on our helmets they all stared at us. So, in a raised voice I say to my wife how 'Pretty' all the bike were in a row. 'All the Suzuki GSXR's in a row', 'all the HD's in a row'!!! "But look only ONE Burgman, what a bunch of image conscious followers"

At that we rode off, won't go back on a Sunday. Some folk are really strange. I imagine if there hadn't been 'gangs' of bikers it would have been different but the fact is like all things in life, bravery in numbers!!!!!!

On your last comment doug we are all the same I ride because I love it and would take the bike over the car every time I currently ride 10000 a year on the scoot and love it'i think people that judge you on what you ride are small minded twats that god forbid it if their bikes should get wet,we all ride for different reasons but I personally will help anyone out and nod to any biker whether on a 125 or bigger. There I've had my dad rant .I know the south coast well and do enjoy riding down there .the only problem with Lyme Regis is that you have to park the bikes in the top car park and it is quite a walk back up the hill could do with a cable car to get you up the hill

Laughing With you all the way on that one. At least the bike bays are right next to the entrance and the oggie shop is half way up the hill if you need a break!!!! Laughing Laughing

Have you visited Portland Bill over the past few years. The tea rooms by the light house have been rebuilt and is way better than the old hut that used to be there.

I decided to stop waving, nodding, flashing headlights etc, at other bikers nearly a year ago now, and I ignore any waves and nods at me. I played the game for many years and nowadays I just can't be bothered . I don't know them, and if they feel slighted that's their problem. Twisted Evil

I wave at almost everyone that's not in a car. I wave at other scooters, I wave at the harley guys who don't wave back, I wave at guys on mopeds, I wave at guys on bicycles, I wave at pedestrians, I wave at guys in front of their stores sweeping the sidewalk.

It's not really a bother. It's polite and friendly.

I usually nod or flash a headlight at fellow Motorcyclists. I also make a point of letting motorists, [or lorries] out of side roads, when i can see no-one will let them out. I believe it lets them know not all 2 wheelers are mad speed freaks, and some of us can be courteuos to other road users. The usual smile and wave from them makes me hope they will remember my action when next they see a motorcyclist. Laughing
