PostSubject: Rear axle nut   Sun Mar 13, 2011 3:19 am

While discovering the quirks of my new s-wing, i noticed something that i have never seen before, the rear axle nut turns with the wheel. Ive rode it for several miles already before noticing this. Is this normal? Better yet, surely someone has theirs up on its center stand right now, could said someone go turn the rear wheel and see if it does it on their unit?

No, that is not normal! There may be a spacer missing in the rear axel assembly. Do not ride until fixed.

On second thought it may just be that the nut has not been tightened properly. It takes a 27 mm socket, in that case it could be sinple to fix. Don't venture too far from home for the next few weeks, get a service manual also, a good investment. The S'Wing is a great bike.

Maybe it's just not tight enough; the torque value according to the factory manual is 102 lb/ft.

Hi Tagg,

Yes, the rear axle nut does turn with the wheel on the Silverwing. I found that out 1 1/2 ago and was thinking of a way a person could use that to drive a small generator for extra DC voltage. Sure is strange to see but that is normal for the rear axle nut to turn on this bike.

Thats the conclusion i came up with as well Dennis after looking at the breakdown. The wheel is splined onto the final drive output shaft, which is then nutted to the side of the wheel, which is what i was seeing rotating.
