Staying Hydrated Empty

Since I realize many riders obsess about many things, I thought I'd help by presenting some clarity about hydration while riding.

Good article with a bit of practical advice.

Thanks Dale, with the hot temps this summer this is not only good advice but a survival skill! Several times this summer I have had a symtom or two even when I followed all the steps. Recognising these symtoms is key to a safe ride.

Living and riding in desert Arizona, this is a big deal here. I have to agree with Hammy's comments about protecting yourself from the hot wind. If you want to experience it, get a hair dryer, turn it on low to medium heat (depending on the dryer), and point it towards your face. That will give you a good approximation of what it feels like. Under these conditions, you will actually feel cooler by wearing long sleeves and long pants. It keeps the heat of the Sun off of your skin, and helps keep the hot wind off as well. Not sure? When was the last time you saw an Arab in the desert wearing short sleeves and shorts? sunny

Hammy

I saw an irrelevant one time. It was big and gray and it was when we were at the circus.

It was squirting water out of it's long trunk. Maybe it was trying to get hydrated.

I dunno know how you could delete one though...they're pretty big.

They had camels there too, but they had two backs.

Funny man!

actually, regarding Hydration, a lot of the IBA folks do make their own hydration systems to last the 200-350 mile range they have in between stops (cos of aux tanks). A common way is to get an insulated cooler, usually 1.25 gallon, drill a hole and use refrigerator tubing to run it through to a Camelbak hose and bite valve. Some guys even combine two coolers, mounted on either passenger peg, and run both hoses up to the front and connect them to retractable clips on their tank bags so folks can drink gatorade from one or water from the other if they wish.
