COOLING FAN - Cooling Fan Empty
PostSubject: Cooling Fan   COOLING FAN - Cooling Fan I_icon_minitimeThu Apr 21, 2016 10:38 pm

Had the swing almost a week now and have noticed the cooling fan is on when I come home from a ride. Days have been no hotter than 80 degrees. Its a 2011 and engine temperature is in the middle of the range on the gauge so its not indicating hot. Just wondering if this is norm................I have several other bikes and fan only comes in on hot days in stop and go traffic.

COOLING FAN - Cooling Fan Empty
PostSubject: Re: Cooling Fan   COOLING FAN - Cooling Fan I_icon_minitimeThu Apr 21, 2016 10:48 pm

I've had mine turn on quite often in temperatures considerably less than 80 degrees F. It hasn't overheated or lost any fluid so I think it is just the way it operates. It is usually when doing a bit of stop/start running in traffic after a bit of open road riding.

I think that because the engine is tucked away inside the bodywork it doesn't get much airflow around it so relies on the air through the radiator for most of it's cooling.
It's normal so don't worry. It just means the temperature is being controlled within a narrow range.

Mine does that also. Especially after coming off the highway and pulling into the garage. The engine is warm and the fan cools it off. I've always felt it's normal too. No biggie...

Normal for mine, sometimes it's not running when I pull in but sit at idle when I'm getting it into it's parking spot they come on, temp gauge shows nothing abnormal.

COOLING FAN - Cooling Fan Empty
PostSubject: Re: Cooling Fan   COOLING FAN - Cooling Fan I_icon_minitimeFri Apr 22, 2016 3:33 pm

Mine will come on when temp gauge gets to mid mark usually at stops or if moving slow in traffic. Unless overheating, this is normal.  Most cars will do this too, just not something you notice sitting inside and more isolated from the outside. Years ago engines had fans directly attached to the crankshaft so a fan was always going and pulling air through the radiator to keep it cool, now with transverse mounted engines and engines mounted like a motorcycle, an electric fan needs to be used and is turned on by a thermostat type switch that keeps the engine running at the optimal running temperature.

Every water cooled Honda I've ever owned that had a cooling fan does/did this. My VFR 1200 had a very loud fan. But it's normal.

Sounds about right, like mine. But rarely does the temp gauge vary.
