Kappa K46 top case and universal monolock mount

I just found a Kappa “Zippy” K46l monolock top case on Facebook Marketplace for $30. It’s an older (ten years?) 46 liter Kappa monolock case off a 2013 Honda PCX150.  I had read some comments about monolock units only being intended for slower speed, smaller scooters, but for $30 I figured I’d give it a try.

I didn’t want to spend the extra money for the Silverwing specific Givi or Kappa monolock mount, so I went ahead and mounted the universal monolock mount that came with this Kappa top case.

The universal monolock mounting plate went on pretty easily with four bolts with just a little drilling and trimming of the plastic grid to fit the two rear mounting holes in the Silverwing rear metal frame.

I just added a couple of washers under the two forward bolts between the monolock plate and the Silverwing frame to account for the curvature of the metal frame, and the assembly is a lot more solid and sturdy than I thought it would be.

I’ve read some discussion that the monolock units and their mounting plates are for slower scooters, and the monokey units are for street bikes with higher speeds. But judging by the quality of this Kappa 46l top case and how solid it’s universal mount installation turned out, I have no concerns about using this monolock case for interstate traveling.

I have this exact same top box which is on it's 2nd Swing now. Approximately 250 000kms without issue other than a bit of a rattle. Bunged some tape in the gaps.

I've had one of those Kappa boxes that on the back of various big bikes and they are fine, but possibly not quite as secure as more premium products. The lock finally gave up (after perhaps 100k miles of UK weather) and I scrapped it, I replaced it with the Givi version (identical) and that's sat on the Tenere for 30K miles.

I've always used the Givi/Kappa Monokey rear racks on maxi scooters, apart from when I had a Helix with a NonFango rear rack and 50 litre top box way back in the last century.

The only differences between Monolock and Monokey set ups is the way the top box locks onto the rear rack. The Monokey system doesn't have the two long raised letterbox slots at the front of the rack like the Monorack does. Instead it has two raised posts that slots on the base of a Monokey top box push into.

I doubt if speed is an issue between Monolock and Monokey systems, Monolock racks and boxes tend to be used on smaller capacity commuter scooters for storing a helmet or a few other items, and Monolock top boxes max out at 47 litres. Monokey top boxes are more useful for everyday and touring use as they go up to 56 litres. 

Givi or Kappa, it's the same manufacturer in Bergamo, Italy. Bergamo is also a very nice place for a day trip if you're staying in nearby Milan.

The seller took this off a 2013 PCX150 that he just picked up from an elderly gentleman. The PCX150 only had 150 miles on it! So I’m assuming given the “like new” condition of this top box, it was put on the PCX150 when it was new and was never really used much at all.
