Seat damper upgrade?

Hey,

On my Burgman 400, I had found on a forum a mod that consisted in changing the damper to a model that allowed almost a 90° opening.

No change to the hoist point, just a swap of the damper

Does anyboby tried that on the Silverwing?

Umm, No, but would you happen to know the sizes of the OEM and that 90° seat lift for the Burgy? I agree that it sure would be nice to have the seat open a lot further than is does.

Somebody did change the seat damper,( they did pictures) I changed mine as well. It must be somewhere in the achives

You may be thinking of Hotwings' eBay seat strut upgrade, or HondaSilver's post about seat strut he got from McMaster-Carr. But none of those aftermarket struts raise up anywhere near 90°.

Does anyone have any further info on that high rise strut?

I dont think getting the seat to raise to 90° could be easily done! The strut length is limited by the distance between the mounting points! I did change the oem strut, but only because it was weakening and would just barely keep the seat opened. Personally the opened seat seems adequate to access anything stored below!

Never known why most scooter seats including the silverwing do not open sideways ,like on the Honda swing 125cc. Much better access to all your gear .

The damper was exact same size when ''retracted'' but goes a bit more when extracted

It's a swap task, no tools needed

I am wondering if we could not do the same upgrade on the Silverwing.

If I have the OEM data such a : length, course, force and diameter I can pick us a new one that has a stronger force and a longer course...

That would cost us nothing doing a try and trying to see if a replacement longer damper exits..

My Reflex is that way, much better.

How far will the seat open with out the damper? If it get up close to 90 deg. , remove the damper and uses a stick.

Yeah but the stick is realy not good for day to day use.

It's not that bad for maintenance work, but for day to day..

Anyone has an idea how to get all the dimensions and force of the damper?

The seat strut body is 15MM diameter and 165 MM long (from eyelet center), the shaft extends 12MM from the strut body end to the eyelet center, the total extended length is 280MM from eyelet to eyelet centers. All measurements are approximate. I also read somewhere that the total force of the strut is 5kg.

If I got it well,

Strut diameter = 15
Course = 280-165 = 115
E = Longeur = 280

Weight of 9 kg = 900 N
(1 kg = 10 N)

Do you have an idea of the diameter of the rod (not the body)

Your interpretation is correct. The shaft diameter is 6 mm, the strut body is 145 mm long without the eye, and the eye diameter is 8 mm

I could be wrong about the 9 kg lifting weight for the OEM seat strut. The markings on the strut are "SHOWA 5 k 09" --if that helps.

Yes, approximately 280 mm, eye to eye. Regarding the lift force; as far as I know it's either 5 kg or 9 kg. But which ever it is it is insufficient to support the seat if the seat has any upgrades --like a raised butt rest-- or if a butterfly should land on it.

I can't see how another seat strut could mount at the same locations and raise the seat higher unless the rod has multiple sections --like an umbrella handle.

It needs to be measured from the top of the body till the begining of the eye of the rod..

simple fix= take damper off----use paint mixing stick to prop up seat at just about any angle you want---works great if you have added junk to make stock seat weigh more

As above, 115 mm +\- 2%

Ok then there is no change we found a strut that has the same body size and a longer rod extension..

Shame..

Did you had an improvement in seat openning range?

No difference in opening range, merely replacing worn out item. As others have said, I doubt you can open seat further due to mounting points, but then I've always found opening large enough.

Thank you, wobble, for posting the site that has the damper/opener. I came really close to paying $30 for the OEM part...but now, I am thinking of going to the place where you got yours. They only want $13.29 for their part.
How is it holding up for you? Are you happy with the damper? Would you buy it again or would you go OEM for twice the money? Thanks for your advise.

Thanks for posting this Wobble! I ordered one and it has just turned up. It looks good but the chrome on the shaft was a little rough so I polished it and it is now smooth so hopefully won't rub the seals and wear out quickly. The only problem was it took 2 ½ months to turn up!!! But seeing as the scooter has been off the road most of that time due to hitting a massive pothole it wasn't a problem.
I guess I will be able to put my trunk light bulb back in now coz the seat will lift rather than staying down but unlocked and flatten the battery.
