Charging System Malfunction? Empty
PostSubject: Charging System Malfunction?   Charging System Malfunction? I_icon_minitimeTue Jan 22, 2013 6:34 am

Took a one hour ride the other night and 40 miles out I when slowed down in residential area the ABS light started flashing and the entire entire speedometer panel started flashing also - never saw this before. When I turned the SWing off - the battery was dead - got a jump and rode towards home - AND when I slowed down in City traffic the flashing started back up. When I got home the battery was dead - totally drained as would not turn over engine. Trickle charged it overnight and battery back to 13volts and plenty of cranking power 8hours later. So, not the battery.

I have started the diagnostic process outlined in Honda Service Manual for the charging system. 1st step was to measure the current leaking to ground with key 'off". It is supposed to be less than 1.1 mA leakage current to ground and mine is about 50mA leakage to ground. The manual says to start 'disconnecting' stuff until you isolate the ground fault. I am getting a more sensitive multimeter later today to double-check my readings. I ride my swing nearly every day.

Has anyone measured their current leakage to ground and what did you get? If you had a 'ground fault' - how did you go about determining where it was? Thanks.

1- Measure the Battery-Voltage when engine is running , lights off ,with a good charged battery and report this here.
When Idle = ... Volt
When Rpm5000 = ... Volt

2- Measuring the leak-current only with all loads off.
Meaning... Ignition key off.
Take out the lightbulb in the trunk.

I did measured the leak of my SW when 9 years old.
It was 3 mA. (it's ok for a old bike)

Question:
Did you lately worked on your SW electrick system or added a new item?

Under your seat are fuses.
Take them out one by one and look at your leak measurement.
When the current drops below 5 mA , then we know where to look.
(it's a start)

He'll have to take the headlight bulb out to test w/out lights first.
