Hi, squasher! I made the variator tool this weekend and replaced the belt, so the recollection is current. Hopefully I'm answering the right question, but the small holes in the variator (guess that's the right word) accept quarter inch, or roughly 6 millimeter, hardware rather nicely.
I used two two-inch carriage bolts with flat washers and self-locking nuts, which cost all of 81 cents at Ace Hardware. Everything else (tools, wood) was already available in my garage. My Silver Wing is a 2002 model that I purchased last year. Your plan to replace the eight year old belt is a good one, in my opinion.
