PostSubject: Looking at Silverwings   Mon Jan 16, 2012 2:35 pm

Hi. I'm looking at a 2005 Silverwing that I found on CL. I haven't been able to find the 2005 specs for this scoot. Is the 2005 carb or EFI? I will be looking at the bike this week. What kind of things should I be looking for. Thanks!

The specs for the Silverwing haven't changed from year to year.
Only cosmetic differences.
Look for tire condition, scratches that indicate it was laid down,
Ask for repair records and ask who maintained it.
Others will chime in with more.

Dan

That means all Silver Wings are EFI. Other than cosmetics, like Dan said, there are no changes from year to year save one -- until very recently, ABS was optional. Now it's standard. Look for pulse rings on the discs, or check the VIN. I believe our admin, Honda_Silver, has a link to make looking up the VIN easy.

Bongo: real obvious things like condition of tires, overall appearance which could suggest how well it was taken care of, maint records to show at least oil change frequency, pull the oil stick and see what oil looks like...may have been just changed and wont' tell you anything other than that, but at least you will know. Milage is something you have to judge for yourself but when I was looking recently I looked for one under 20K. Put it on center stand and see how motor runs and accelerates; check rear brake while you're at it. Test ride it and see if it pulls away smoothly without jerking or hesitation. If you're not comfortable riding yet, have someone that can ride it go with you. Two sets of eyes are better anyway.

Don't be hasty in buying if theres any doubts as there are a fair number of used Silverwings avail and this is not a good time for sellers, being winter. Take your time and look around. I found my 05 with 22oo miles, about like new. I did pay a premium price ($3800) but it was worth it.

Meanwhile, thoroughly read this forum for maint tips, and learn about the SW. Its a great scooter and in my opinion has less potential mechanical issues than any other avail here in the States.

Purchase a report on the Silverwing ... to check any accident history.

Thanks for all the excellent advice. The SWing in question has been sold - I was too slow. So I'm back to my search. At least I've found a great SilverWing forum.

Bongo, how about listing your location in your avatar? Inquiring minds like to know these things. One of us might be able to steer you to a good buy.
