PostSubject: How much can a Swing take?   Tue Jul 05, 2011 4:34 am

We all seem to be very big on taking good care of our Swings but I know a guy who don't.

He bought his new in 08 and he rides alot. Since 08 he has put on over 60,000 miles and to date has yet to wash it. He rides alot on gravel roads. He has had the oil changed twice in that time. And his first drive belt was changed at 38,000 miles. This he was forced to do as it would'nt pull away from a stop sign without a lot of trying. Now he kept the old belt and when I asked him about why he thinks he might use it if the new one breaks. Now he is complaining about the engine temp is running a lot higher than normal, I'm thinking the there is no air flow anymore due to dirt on the engine and his gas gauge has stopped working, don't know why this happened.

But he still rides every day. He's not a bad guy and a good friend of mine. I'm not sure what he's thinking other than when the scooter finally stops altogether he will most likely junk it and buy a new one. Money he has plenty.

I guess I'm posting this to let everyoe know that even if you don't service or wash your scooter that it can take alot. Not recommending this and myself I wash and shine mine every week and have service done before it's due. I believe that I'll get well over 100,000 miles on it.

For years I have been a firm believer of the way to keep a machine going is to use it. ( I also service and clean.)

Leaving it stand for periods allows components to seize, perish and rust.

Keeping it going is good. Riding a machine is better.

My dream----buy and ride into ground, never wash-----have purchased over 75 new bikes but never had guts to ride into ground. Taking wonderful care doesn't seem to mean much at trade time.

Neither does leaving on replacement screens, the top case, or pointing out you've fitted a load of expensive stuff like exhausts, fork springs, rear shocks, or any of this J Costa, Dr Pulley stuff.
