PostSubject: Brittany - Here I Come!   Tue May 17, 2011 2:18 pm

Meeting some of my old riding friends from England and staying with another ex-pat in Brittany as we did last year.
I'm setting off tomorrow morning and staying overnight at a B&B (chain) motel in Caen then meeting the others on Thursday afternoon at McDonald's (!!!) in Avranches for the last leg of the journey to Josselin - they're coming over to Cherbourg from Portsmouth on the 9.00 ferry.

One planned ride is to the German WW2 Submarine Pens at St. Nazaire where HMS Campbeltown (ex-US Navy destroyer) was rammed into the dock gates and blown up to prevent the huge dock being used to service the big German battleships - it was the only dry-dock on the Atlantic Coast big enough to accommodate them.

There's another day's ride planned but this year were going to have time to wander round the local market and so on.

We leave on Monday and will probably visit the Submarine Museum in Cherbourg before the overseas party catch the ferry home while I return for an overnighter at the same B&B in Caen before riding back to Belgium on Tuesday.

I'll try to take some pictures. Smile

Thank you.
It is my vowed intent to take it easy, hence the overnight stops.

My wife and I were just talking about taking a drive over to Brittany to investigate possible places to live. A little far for the scooter over the weekend. Looking forward to your pictures.

When I get back I'll get in touch - Brian and Jan with whom we're staying visited Brittany for a holiday and decided on the spot to sell up and buy a house there.
I don't think either of them had been abroad before and certainly knew no French!
Thney did all the research, rented a house then found one to buy.
I think they know pretty much what's what.
They're Northerners and generous to a fault.

I'm sure they'll offer support if you want it - they're good company anyway.

Thanks. We were there last August. Drove throughout western France. From home to Venice to Brittany and back home again in two weeks. We drove as far as southern Spain during Spring Break this year. We really liked Brittany. My wife heard that it might be a good place to retire. She is fluent in French and I have a smattering. I don't speak any German at all, but I seem to be able to get along just fine here. I suspect the French are slightly different. Would love to correspond with you and your friends. Have a good trip.

Working on it!
My photography skills are lacking, Jeff, but I have a few pictures and will poach some from the avid snappers when they download them.
Suffice it to say at the moment, I had a lovely time in glorious weather and rode 1275 miles in all - the Silverwing performed flawlessly.
