I have bought a battery for my ATV at walmart so I would think they may have one . If you have a Batteris Plus near you I would go to them.

Get an AGM battery by WestCo. Best battery out there. I have used them on my last 2 BMW's.

http://www.westcobattery.com/

I would not buy anything else. Yes they are a little more expensive. Forget about that Walmart crap.

Go with a Yuasa battery. As Dan mentioned above the Yuasa YTZ12S is 210 CCA and the YTZ14S (used on the ST1300) is exactly the same size but 230 CCA.

Yuasa batterys are not cheap, but they are top quality. There are a couple of vendors on eBay who sell them at decent discount.

If you live in a warm climate you might be able to get away with a Bike Master AGM battery, but you've got to go with their version of the YTZ14S battery as it is rated at 210 CCA. While their YTZ12S is only rated at 140 CCA. So don't be fooled if someone tries to tell you the the Bike Master is 'more affordable'.

Gotta give Yuasa their props: I had purchased a YTZ12S Yuasa about 3 or 4 years ago. When I found out that I didn't need a new battery -I had a bad stator- I shelved the battery. Last month I installed the "new" battery only to find out that it was shot because it wasn't stored with a trickle charger connected.

A new Yuasa was going to cost me ~$150. So I contacted Yuasa's east coast plant to find out if there was some way I could restore the "new" battery. The lady at the Customer Service dept inquired about how I had 'stored' the battery and when I told her that it had just been sitting on the shelf she thanked me for my honesty and then said that she would replace the battery at no charge, as a courtesy. She even said that she was going to send me the YTZ14S battery as an upgrade.

How's that for standing behind your product!?

My scoot starts great now. Even in this miseable ice & snow we had of late. HTH

Tim

If you can get a battery made by the firm 'Oddesy' - they are brilliant.

Odyessy batteries are excellent. I've used one in my previous Goldwing which put a pretty heavy load on batteries. Instead of replacing the battery every other year the Odyssey lasted four and a half years and was still working like new when I sold the bike. As soon as the current YUASA battery in my SW gets tired it will get an Odyessy. Batteries Plus has them but I usually buy them online where I can get a better deal even with shipping added.

I also choose Yuasa; I have two 04 and one 06 Honda products with the original batteries. All three load test ok AND both spend their down time on a Deltran Tender.

My sweetie’s original non-Yuasa battery in her Suzuki crapped out the second year of ownership. This was also connected to a Deltran Tender while not in use. We replaced it with a Yuasa in 09 and it is still going strong.

Just remember, the worst thing for a battery is discharge. Slow discharge is when sulfation occurs, and sulfation is what typically kills batteries that are used occasionally.
A good float charger will keep the battery fully charged preventing sulfation, but not apply enough voltage and current to overheat and boil off the electrolyte.
Repeat discharge / recharge cycles may slow sulfation compared to leaving the battery sit, but avoiding discharge completely is best.

Been having probs starting the Swing, and I had noticed a smell very similiar to acid in the underseat box, two and two added up to a new battery. I have fitted a Lucas YTZ14, a very tight fit that needed the plastic buffer strip removing, then a bit of cardboard stuffed in to stop the one corner rattling.

The difference in starting is astonishing! The moral is when the seller of your new bike tells you it has had a new battery check what was fitted.... This had got a lousy Chinese YT12-BS, underpowered leaky junk that had lasted less than 6 months. Sad I am tempted to contact the guy I purchased the Swing from, and who seemed straight, and see if he can get the money back!

I will add that a friend on another bike forum suggested that the leak may have been as a result of overcharging on the bike... I will keep an eye on the new one and see if I can get the charging aspect checked.

I bought the OEM battery and had them install it since they were already working on my bike. I had to have them remove my "stripped off" oil plug and change my coolant so I just said what the heck and let them install the battery. Mine was dead and when I tried to charge it the charge only lasted a few days. It was $149 at the shop, which I thought was very expensive, but he did say it is the same battery that many of the bigger bikes use too.

bigbird wrote:
Did you also order the dedicated charger for it?

My understanding is that a regular charger will work as long as it doesn't have a desulfination cycle. But the Shorai charger analyzes each cell and charges each cell as required, not in series like regular chargers. The Shorai charger connection is to a BMS 5 pin port in the battery, not to the terminal posts.

I did not originally order the dedicated charger. After I read your post I called www.rocketmoto.com to see if they have the charger ( did not appear on website ). They called the manufacturer and ordered the charger and extension cable for me. They asked if I wanted the battery now or wait and have shipped together, I told them to wait since I am not in a rush.

So your post cost me more money tongue

The battery is not installed standing up like that in its compartment. If you look at your battery installed, the battery lies flat with the terminals along the top. That alignment puts the -ve on the left and +ve on the right.

How does that work?
Perfectly.

Duh, guess I should have taken the battery cover off to take a look. Thanks much for the info.

Got the Shorai battery in today. It came from 303 Cycle thru Amazon. Speedy delivery. Man, that battery is light weight. I thought the box was empty when I first picked it up. I installed it and cranked it up and WOW is all I can say. Now to see what the long term result is.

I received my Shorai battery and charger on Tuesday. After work, I put the battery on the charger. I did not have to but I wanted to test the charger.

I did not have anytime to install the battery till this morning, I took a day off for a Patriot Guard mission. The Shorai battery case is a little smaller than the original OEM battery, so I added added a thick foam underneath (laying down) and a thin foam on the bottom of the battery. I think the foam reduced some vibration since the majority is covered with foam.

The original OEM battery held a nut securely in place to easily screw on the wires. The Shorai battery has a nut attached to a very squishy foam to fill the space. I had a problem installing the positive screw, I could not thread the screw because of the foam flexing too easily. I inserted a plastic ziptie head behind the foam and cut off the ziptie. I was then able to thread the screw the first time. I dd not have any problem on the negative screw.

The Silverwing started immediately ... it seemed even faster starting than the OEM battery. Subjectively it sounded a little better would be hard to prove ... I would be curious if anyone else notices the same. I also noticed that startup idle RPMs looked to about 100-200 RPMs higher.

I was following another PGR member that was driving 77-80 MPH actual by GPS to meet the group enroute. The RPMs seemed to be a little lower than normal even with my old belt ... I would be curious if anyone else notices the same.

Bill,

Better starting with a better battery i do believe.
Because the ignition is more powerfull if the Voltage not is dropping by high load of startmotor.

But once the engine is running, the alternator/regulator takes it all over from the battery.

From then , the battery does nothing but demanding a little current.

So it's hard to believe , the scooter runs better or the rpm's are lower etc..

I was following another PGR member that was driving 77-80 MPH actual by GPS to meet the group enroute. The RPMs seemed to be a little lower than normal even with my old belt ... I would be curious if anyone else notices the same.

Ive read that there significantly lighter, is this true?

The LFX18A1-BS12 was ~6 pounds lighter.

Got the Shorai battery in today. It came from 303 Cycle thru Amazon. Speedy delivery. Man, that battery is light weight. I thought the box was empty when I first picked it up. I installed it and cranked it up and WOW is all I can say. Now to see what the long term result is.

I can't find the battery on Amazon - do you have a link for the one you bought?

Well, no matter what, it looks like we're looking at about $170 cheapest price no matter what, unless that discount through ADVrider still applies.

At $170 it's about the same price as Yuasa's YTZ14 S battery which is an upgrade from the OEM YTZ12-S battery.

There's a discount from for ADVRider memebers???

I ordered the Shorai LFX18A1-BS12 this morning at 9:30 then a half hour later I decided to order the charger too. From mishacycles.com

I found them on the Shorai site under dealers. I noticed the phone number was located in the Chicago suburbs. I called him last night. Alex is the owner. He answered my questions. The price was $169.95. The charger was $74.95.

He was at my door this evening at 7:15 with products in hand. How's that for service. No complaints here.

Bob and I were at the motorcycle show a couple of weeks ago and Shorai was there. Then I looked up on our Forum here and read more about this battery. So I decided to go with the Shorai. Unbelievable how light this battery is and size. Have yet to put it on.

Cathy,

I was surprised to find out how much batteries cost and then find out they are so small. I think I paid $150 and just had the shop install it at the same time they changed out my anti freeze. Did yours die on you? Mine lasted about 4 years but I never put it on a charger or battery tender.

Flipping heck fellas!, i just looked at the info about this battery. I also looked at the price. $189. For a battery!! . I could buy the standard Yuasa battery for £35. That means i could buy about 5-6 batterys for the same price. As my 07 Swing still has the original battery and is performing as it should after 5years i'll stick it I just thought i should add i rarely go more than three days without riding, so i have never charged,or needed to charge, my battery. Smile

Yikes! That is one pricey battery! The weight saving are significant, but will it last that much longer than the original I still have in 09?

The equivalent Yuasa battery battery as the OEM was around $160 and way up (last I checked).

I believe Yuasa came out with cheaper grade batteries with cheaper prices.

I will find out how long the Shorai battery will last. I also have the Shorai battery with the Shorai charger.

My take----since the bike has no kick start or push start capability---I would go with exact OEM replacement----they work fine. If I keep machine long time, at end of three year time I replace, need it or not. Walking sucks. Battery on my Concours (spare bike) did last 5 years(56,000 miles), at that time I replaced as I knew problems could be coming---it used cheap wet battery from Batteries Plus.

Even in extreme cold my various Hondas have always started and I have used them down to zero F------My Suzuki GS500E was no go in extreme cold-----just take battery out, warm in hot water for half hour or more and you get bike running for the day. Now my new BMW R60/6 ('76) only would go in cold by big downhill.

Fuel Injection has voltage requirements to work----so having decent battery power/condition is important.

I do not use trickle chargers, but daily use of bike keeps battery up.
