PostSubject: doesnt sound the same   Thu Mar 03, 2011 1:54 pm

my swing seems to be surging slightly and when i say close the throttle hard to slow down lets say from 80 mph the bike almost stops dead .in the morning on start up she will idle at around 2000 revs i belive this has something to do with the enricher system.but the engine sounds like it is surging around 100 to 200 revs of fluxchuation .idle is set at 1300 when warm and it idles fine once warm.spark plugs are 3000 miles old dont really know where to start on this one cheers all for any help.doesnt sound as crisp as she did sort of flat

Check for air leaks/ loose manifold.
As it warms up and expands it closes the leak.

Colour of exhaust and spark plugs
This will tell if you are running rich or lean

check fuel filter/ water in fuel/clogged injector
if you are running lean

decoke maybe...is there any pre ignition?

anyone else?

I haven't looked into the SW that deeply since I haven't had any problems yet with mine but on the Goldwings there's a system that is designed to allow air to bypass around the throttle plates to prevent extra high vacuum in the intake system from causing overly hard compression braking. There may be a similar system in the SW. In the Goldwing it's called the Shot air System. If the bypass leaks in the GW the idle will be unstable. I'll try to remember to take a look in my shop manual tomorrow after I finish running off a batch of 9mm reloads.

The SWing does have a fuel filter; it's attached to the fuel pump inside the tank, like many Honda autos. Pain in the a** to get to.

I don't know if UK Honda part numbers are the same as those for the US; for we colonials the part number is 16900-MCH-003. Runs roughly 50 USD at the dealer.
