PostSubject: New Silverwing'er   Fri Oct 01, 2010 9:04 am

Hi guys
I'm new on the Silverwing scene so expect some questions.

I'm from London, UK
Also I'm 27 making me younger than most according to that age range poll.

I've got a Silverwing 600 2004 Blue with only 11,000 miles

There's a small amount of corrosion forming on my wheels so I'm thinking of using a drill wire-brush and then painting it with Hammerite metal protection.
Is that a good idea?

Also the bike was first reg'd in Jan 2005 and I cant find anything in the service history about the belt being changed because your supposed to do it every 2 years or 16000 miles.
Should I get it changed right away or do you think it will be fine for a few thousand miles?

Thanks mate.
The box came with the bike.
I believe it's a genuine Honda 45 litre box. Also the mounting bracket is genuine too.
It can happily fit two large fullface helmets in there.

Welcome 187!!! cheers

As for your wheels, I'd be extremely cautious with a wire brush... seen it cause problems. It takes a little more doing but a stiff bristled scrubber.

Once you have it cleaned down, start coating with Mother's cleaner on a rotary type applicator. Don't know how but it builds up a protective film of some kind. I only have to do mine about once a year now.

Here's to many happy, SAFE miles um ... kilometers for your enjoyment!!

Hmmm true that. Wire drill is probably a little too abrasive.
Thanks

Hello from another UK based forum member.

Regards the applying a wire brush to your alloy wheels - Noooooooooooooo

Aliminium alloy and a ferrous metal brush will exaserbate the corrosion problem. Disimilar metal corrosion! Not good. Use a non metalised abrasive scrubber, one of those green pads, then chemicallytreat with a alloy compatible treatment, then apply some sort of paint.

I personally would have a specialised tradesman like 'ChipsAway' have a go as they will treat and repair damage to alloy wheels.

As for your belt, take the covers off and have a good look. It's a fairly simply job, JeffR I believe has a section with pics on doing the job, it's in .pdf format but I used it the other day to check mine. Examine the belt and it will allow you to clean the dust and such from inside the casing too!

Other than matey welcome, loads of mega useful info on here, suggest you use the 'Search' feature first. But ask away, most of the guys on here have a vast amount of 'Wing' experience and there are some good pictorials on most servicing work.

Enjoy the banter and ride safe.

Dig it, awesome scooter, dude.

Your belt should be fine, but in the interest of operator familiarization, you should open the CVT case up for cleaning and inspection.

Your V light will come on in the intrument panel at exactly 16,000 miles, which is the recommended belt change interval. To turn the light off after belt replacement, insert key, hold down both the regulation buttons, turn key on, light will flash, turn key off, light will be off.

Hi and welcome.

Had a similar problem with rear wheel corrosion on my 04 model,it was beyond cleaning, removed wheel and had it powder coated.
The end result was better than new, cost was £25.

Hi Premises 187.

Welcome to the Forum.

I had same box and Rack on my NT700 and so now that I know about yours I will be getting quotes for same.

Interesting to note your mileage.

My bike is only six months old and has 5200 on clock already - When I bought it, a few weeks ago, it had done 3900.

I am however suffering the dreaded squeal from left hand belt area and the bike is presently under the care of Honda for third time in hope can get it fixed.

The clutch plates were deglazed last week - Fine for 150 miles but back to old tricks.

Otherwise a magic bike which can ewasily hold its own amongst traditional motorcycles.

Welcome to the forum, and hope that you enjoy your new ride!

I have a 2003 that I bought 13 months ago with 4,000 miles on it. It now has a little over 12,000 miles on it. The belt is original, and doing fine (I looked it over in January when installing the J Costa). I also have not bothered to replace the anti-freeze or brake fluid yet. Both work well.

Ride safe.
