This post is intended to query the membership to see what technique they use when accelerating from a standing stop at 'multi-lane' traffic lights. Quite often at traffic lights there is a long line of cars stopped at a 'red light' waiting for the 'green light'. If there are two lanes waiting and a decent gap between lanes, I scoot to the front of the line (legal in California) - and edge if I can in front of the car to either my left or right - or if I can't get directly in front of them - then I stay between them - but edge up so the nose of my front wheel is ahead of their front bumper (where they can clearly see me). Then when the light goes green the fun starts - it begins with getting the clutch engaged which is then immediately followed by a full open throttle. I accelerate as fast as the 2008 SWing can (with my 24gr Dr Pulley Sliders) to the speed limit plus 5mph - then I look in my mirror and always see (noted exception below) the cars waaay back by the time that I hit my intended speed. I guess I have done this hundreds of times with never a problem. The folks behind me have been always courteous, never have honked, never have said a discouraging word, never have encroached on 'my space', and have generally accepted the procedure. I might add that NOBODY has beat me off the mark at a traffic light - and until last week - none have tried. While in Carson City, Nevada last week I pulled up at a 'red traffic light' and stayed just to the right-of-center with a lane of traffic on my left and one on my right. The light turned green and off we went - but the car to my left anticipated my move and got the jump on me - so it was off to the races. It was a little car driven by a young male (anyone less than 60 is young to me these days) - sort of like a Mini-Cooper but some other brand - but it was a bit souped up. I kept pace with him up to my target speed limit and then let him go - I'd guess that he actually was a bit faster - but not by much. This is the first time that someone has tried to get the jump on me and I am still thinking about this event. I might add that I only do this on clear, dry roads that are in good shape - and never if I am not already stopped at the light and am in the front of the traffic.

So, my questions:
Do you 'peel out' at traffic lights?
Has anyone tried to beat you? Have they beaten you?
Have you had any issues (such as near misses) with 'peeling out'? I am not recommending that anyone do this - but am guessing that many (if not most) do it - certainly in California. I am curious to hear of your experience.

Nah... I'm happy to just go with the flow. If I'm already in front, I'll give it some 'extra' just to get away from the crowd; otherwise I just try to maintain some proper distance.

I find weather at a traffic light, stopped at a intersection or any place you might find people, ride like they don't see you.

Usually not BUT last week I was at a stop light and a kid pulled up next to me in a pickup and gave me the "go" sign... The light changed and he took off and I accelerated modestly. I gave him 3 car lengths and rolled on and left him. I got so far ahead that I passed the next light and he got stuck at it pirat Childish? Yes but it sure felt GOOD! Haven't done that in a long time!!!

I allow myself one jack rabbit start per tank, but never around traffic, or in town. The po-po are everywhere.

When sharing lanes here in California, I usually excelerate slightly faster than the cars around me so as to create a gap for safety. I've had some folks try to stay up a little but no one has raced me so far. The Swing isn't very fast, a high performance car would give it a very hard time.

If I can safely get to the front of a queue of traffic at lights I will.

I also accelerate swiftly to get in front once the lights turn green. (Helps clean up anything on the belt you understand!!! Twisted Evil )

Not a lot has beaten me from a standing start, other than other two wheelers! Smile

I can honestly say that I haven't peeled out from a stop light to beat traffic. But I will say that ever since I got rear-ended (while on my Silver Wing) immediately after a stop light turned green, I do not hesitate to get moving.

I am way more conscience about my speed also. A local police officer said that she clocked me doing 62 in a 25 zone on my Silver Wing. I got off with failure to obey a highway sign because the other officer (who was behind me at the stop sign) agreed that it was unlikely that I could go from 0 to 62 in 50 yards going uphill.
