PostSubject: Mysterious MPG Increase   Mysterious MPG Increase I_icon_minitimeTue Jun 08, 2010 10:26 pm

Huh. I've been checking my mpg for the last 5 or 6 fill-up's, and much to my surprise I'm getting consistently in the mid fifties (with one 49). This has never happened before. Here are my actual last 5 readings, with riding combinations of interstate, in town, and 2-lanes:

54.5
49.0
54.2
53.5
55.0

I can't say that I mind, but I don't know why this is happening. Is this the difference between summer gas and winter gas? I haven't done anything to the scoot to increase mpg's since changing to a K&N air filter and iridium plugs well over a year ago. I guess I didn't bother to check my mileage all of last summer, so I don't know if this same thing happened then. I haven't changed my riding style in any way
either.

What thinks yooze?

This has been talked about before. The SWing gets better gas milage in the hotter weather of summer.

Hi Matthew.

All of your gas mileage calculations are within 10%. I think that's quite normal.

have you been having any strong winds lately? 2 yrs ago in missouri i had tailwinds for two days. i got 67 and 68 mpg those days. possibly, if i had gone in another direction for a while i would have gotten less mpg but the average per tankful would have ... probably been into the 50's??
i get mileage in the 50-60 range here in michigan but i only drive about 50 most of the time. and temperature does seem to make some difference. be glad and hope it doesn't end anytime soon.

No tailwinds to account for this, I don't think. It's been over a couple of weeks or more. I do know that the worst mpg's I've ever gotten were fighting winds on the interstate. That trip gave me about 38mpg if I remember right.

My normal mpg have been more around 47-48 average, so these new numbers are really enjoyable.

I tend to get much better milage in the summer months. Don't know whether it's gas or heat but I like it.

The summer gas/winter gas difference can be aprox 10-15%. While most people getting 22mpg in their cars don't notice a 2 mpg difference, 15% at 50mpg is 7.5 mpg, and that's a pretty startling difference.

I like that 10-15% increase, for sure. I just averaged 47.8 mpg on my three day trip, with a high of about 53, and a low of about 42, and lots of high speed riding in there. I'm not complaining any more. The Swing gets what it gets, and so far I'm really loving its dependability and cruise-ability out on the road. That's what I bought it for.
