Oil Seal issue 9fcdd810

Thinking this may need replaced. Removed wheel today to have new tire put on and after removing swing arm I discovered the rubber torn. The parts diagram shows this to be an oil seal although there is no oil in this area so seems kinda weird. Anyone know how difficult this is to replace?

That is a $9 seal. It is a press fit (snug, not tight), you should be able to lever it up/out with any suitable tool, and tap the new one gently back in. It is basically the same as the seal on the wheel bearings.

Surely we are looking at the 'Dust Seal' here? In my parts manual the 'Oil Seal' goes on the outside of the final shaft holder arm, (swing arm to us!).

The seal in your picture is the 'Dust Seal' part 91253-MCF-003. It's on the inside. (It still doesn't explain why the seal which goes on the outside is called an oil seal).

Doing a good clean up in there would be a good move before you put the new seal in, just in case anything nasty has gotten into the bearing. Don't use any liquids or solvents. As Terry says, it's an easy fix.

That is indeed an oil seal that is used as a dust shield. Most likely it was damaged because the collar that passes through it was put on the shaft backwards. Been there, done that. The seal is double lipped and should have some grease between the lips to make it last a very long time.

The local dealer didn’t have it in stock so I ordered it. I got my tire mounted and went ahead and buttoned it all back together and going to ride it until the new seal comes in then I will disassemble again and put seal in. The collar was on correctly when I removed the wheel but there’s no telling how many tires ago that it was on wrong and boogered the seal up. I bought the bike about a month or so ago and it has 67000 miles on it. The tire I just took off was a car tire and I felt like I could get better handling with the new city grip 2 in these mountain roads I live in.

Years ago, I pushed my scooter to 105 mph with a slight downhill out in the desert and later found a leak up above the dipstick and forward. I cleaned up the area the best I could see and applied a RTV silicone sealant, but it was not long after that it started leaking again. I then found Blue Devil Oil Stop Leak (permanent repair-guaranteed) and added 4oz too 2qts. After about three months or so things did get much better and now years later still have NO leaking and the motor still sounds great. The scooter now has 75,000
