A frightening prospect. Condolences on both developments. |

| The amazing thing to me is Elizabeth's coronation was BEFORE I was born in 1952. I was born in 52 after she became queen. Now I am very close to 70! Wow. She had a long reign for certain! |

All us school kids were given a souvenir 5 shilling silver coin and Coronation mug in 1953. The mug has long gone but I still have the coin minus the case. In 1958 Her Majesty came to Carlisle with Prince Philip as part of Carlisle's Octo Centenary (800 years) Celebrations. They walked through Carlisle Market Hall which was packed with children from Carlisle's infant and junior schools. We were all in nice clean school uniforms, and probably had had a bath the night before in honour of the Royal visit. When the Royal couple appeared for the walk through, we were all cheering like mad and waving our little Union Jack flags. We had very low excitement thresholds back in the Fifties. For reasons unknown, we'd been told to remove the sticks from our flags and add a loop of wool or string instead. They maybe thought there'd be kids getting their eyes poked out by all the waving sticks. Anyway looking back at old black and white TV newsreel footage of the occasion, frantically waving our flags on loops of strings made us look more like like hankerchief waving English Morris Dancers. We each were given a book on The History of Carlisle to commemorate the occasion. All I remember mine had a green cover with Carlisle's coat of arms embossed on it in gold. The Carlisle motto is 'Be Just and Fear Not' if you're interested. I wasn't interested, so I only gave the book a quick flick through. I've read Facebook posts by people of similar age and everyone remembers the Royal visit, the same book and strangely enough the the colour of the cover of the book they were given. |

| I would like to send my condolences as well. I am 63 and she always seemed to conduct herself with total Class. Too bad the world politicians don't act like her.
Godspeed |

| Very true Jeff. The politicians in the House of Commons behave like a school playground rabble in comparison |

| Very true, the concept of service to the country has largely gone from political circles. |
