| Good morning, fine folks.
I have a 2002 Silver Wing with 26k miles that I've been trying to get running. I bought it used after it had sat in storage (in Arizona) for a number of years. I've removed the rust from the fuel tank, installed an OEM fuel pump, put in a new air filter, got new tires installed, and installed an OEM cylinder head. The old head is still usable, but had a broken spark plug stuck in it, which didn't get fixed until after I'd bought the new one. I was briefly able to get the bike running in spring 2023 and rode for about 6 miles before the engine decided it didn't want to start anymore.
So now I'm looking for advice. I'm ultimately looking to sell the Silver Wing but need to know if it'd be better to sell it as is or invest the time/money to get it running first. If I sell it as is, how much should I ask for it? How much would people be willing to spend on a bike that doesn't run? If I want to get it running first, how much would that increase the value? How much time/money woud be reasonable to spend getting the bike running before selling as-is anyway?
If it matters for any of the above, I live in the Portland, OR area (about an hour away). And on the off chance, if anyone else lives in the Portland area and would be interested in coming and looking at the bike, I'd greatly appreciate it (and could throw in dinner for them). |

| In general terms a "Non-Running", but "Popular/Desirable vehicle" (SW600 is not popular), is worth between 20-40% of specify market value/i.e. location, variables like general external appearance/condition and definite knowledge of what exactly will fix it, greatly impacts value, "LIKE A BOX OF CHOCOLATES" unknowns will bring price way down.
Sometimes you have to weigh in the "TIME", effort, cost, difficulty finding parts, etc. versus cutting your losses and moving on. especially is you don't know the fix/cost?, if you really want this vehicle all logical points go out the window and it should be cheaper than new one.
I won't/can't give you a definite dollar value, but my previous vehicle, a 20yr old truck, a very popular/desirable 4wd model, it sustained approx. 40% value collision damage, but still drivable, I could do most repairs myself (lots of work) and save money, but at the end of the day it was dated/old truck. KBB value approx. $4K sold for $500, moved on. |
