OK, twice now I've put items under the SW seat and its jammed shut at the half way point opening at the lock but won't lift more than a few inches.

First occasion I had a pound land rubber coated tie wire bent over the tool tray lip

Second time my shark lid tinted inner visor slider had caught on the seat base (I think)

Am I the only idiot and need to be careful how I pack stuff near the middle of the under seat storage or have others done the same

PS the under seat light bulb has been removed I'd imagine as a result of info from this forum or other owners.

Had mine 3 years and never had the problem, mind you unless i'm parking at the local supermarket and my helmet is under the seat my seat never gets latched down and doesnt latch when sat on, has to be slammed shut.

I've done it once in the 3 weeks I've owned it, I think my crash helmet gets caught.

The only problem, if you can call it a problem, is with it latching. But I've learned to slam it down to get it to latch. My open faced helmet goes into the back portion of the seat storage and it's never moved on me. When I put it in the back of the compartment I lay it on its face. I don't have any face shield on it tho so that might make a difference. The seat has so far always opened nicely for me.

With nothing in the compartment I have to give it a little extra to get it to latch, a touch of lube didn't seem to help either. I close it then give it a smack with the heel of my hand. Thinking about it, hmm maybe a light coat of silicon spray on the rubber seal would help, I'll try that today when I reinstall my back  rest.

I tried that but didn't use silicone spray, I used ICE on everything, seal, ABS edges and the bottom edge of the seat if there was any improvement it was marginal as it still took a firm push to get it to latch. I'll add that both saddle bags and trunk on my Gold Wings were the same way, maybe it's a Honda thing.

I make a fist and bang the top of the seat near the latch. Worked on the 2005 and on the 2007. I hear a solid thunk and know that the latch has caught.

I very rarely store my helmet under the seat because it's a bit of a faff as I normally keep stuff like a security chain, rain gear, first aid kit, tool pouch, tubeless repair kit, LED light, and extra insulating layers and spare gloves in there. That's the whole point of having a large top box like the Givi E55 permanently fitted, one or two full face helmets go in there without any fuss.

The fist technique also works for me to ensure the seat is locked.

I have run afoul of this problem. On mine the middle latch gets jammed by something, glove, jacket sleeve or whatever. Teaches you real fast to make sure it is clear upon shutting. Never had a problem with the rear latch...

No problems in my case. Exact same closing techniqie as Jay says : "I make a fist and bang the top of the seat near the latch." Want to make sure to hear the latch , latch ... to be sure the light is out.

I use a kinder, gentler variation of the fist pounding closure technique.  I ease the seat down, place the heel of my hand on the back edge of the seat and apply downward pressure.  The latch clicks shut nicely and I feel I'm not stressing the latch mechanism.

I would use the gentle technique, but with my 5'3" on heels, I don't have the leverage: hence the fist ! But I must say that I have lots of room in my trunk so I don't worry about anything catching in the latch or the rim.
Jay.
