Good Morning!

Tomorrow I'm picking up a 2005 that hasn't been ridden in many years. I want to thank all who've shared their knowledge and information because without it my task of getting it back on the road will be much harder.

I'm a long time rider (30 something years) but first time scooter owner. I currently ride a '12 DL650Adv but have had Harley's, BMW, Yamaha's, Honda's, Kawasaki's, and a couple of odd balls here and there of all sizes and flavors (dirt, street, sport, touring, adventure) and now SCOOTER. What a hoot.

I may not post much but I appreciate the forum.

Ciao'

Keith

Hello Keith. Welcome to the forum.

If you are a DIY guy, beside making all the usual checks for age-cracked tires, etc, you might want to siphon out that old fuel and add 1/4 can of Seafoam to each of the next four tanksful of fresh fuel.

Good luck with your new ride

Tim

Thanks!
I was told the tank needs to be replaced. I plan on inspecting and pulling the tank it if needed. If it's rusty I may replace it or go with POR-15/Kreem tank sealer.

I'll definitely soak the cylinders in oil before I turn it over, drain all the oil gas out of the fuel system and fill it with some Seafoam, put in some fresh oil, replace the coolant, brake fluids (and fork oil depending), lube the cables, and most likely change the tires before I put it on the road. I've already ordered a factory manual. A new AGM battery and Iridium plugs are a "must do" for me too. I don't do performance mods unless it's way lean from the factory.

I've done a half a dozen "bike rescues" and this is the second from the same guy (got a CB550SC off him in 2004.) I also do car rescues from time to time for friends stuck with a car they can't do anything with. I rarely make any money off them but enjoy the process. My current DL650 rarely requires maintenance so I'm getting rusty.

Really looking forward to experiencing what a scooter feels like to ride more than just around the block.

Welcome

What part of NC are you in? I'm in Charlotte but travel all over the place. Would you be interested in riding sometime? There's a few other burgman riders in CLT too that sometimes venture out.

I'm a scooterist that is looking at ADV bikes too, been drooling over vstrom, versys etc

Andy

Keith, after you are done with the work you've laid out for the SWing you'll have a few years of trouble-free riding.
Jay.

forgot to mention, I have a complete spare drivetrain in the garage from a wing if you are needing parts in your process.

Hi Andy,
I'm 2 1/2 hours from Charlotte in Lee County.  I'm a little out of your area. The bike should be good but I'll keep your spares in mind.
Thank you all for the warm welcome!
I sure hope it won't need more than I expect.  It has 5000 miles on it and was running when parked.  My friend deployed to Afghanistan and then retired and moved so it just sat since 2007. I got it home this afternoon but I'm pretty busy until mid-week.  I'll post some stuff after I get into the process so everyone can tell me "you're doing it wrong!"   Ha!  "Doing it wrong" is my style.  I do it wrong one way, then do it wrong the other.  Then I do it right but have to re-do it right so I'm sure it's right.  Fun.

Greetings and welcome from Nova Scotia. Some friends from here have moved there about 5 or more years ago. Probably more. Think they are in Raliegh. Their home boarders on a golf course.

Hi Mike,
What a coincidence... I'm on a golf course as well. There are a lot of golf communities in North Carolina and they make nice places to live because typically they have more space between homes and lots more trees. Thanks for the warm welcome!

Hi Keith and welcome to the forum! I had a 74 Honda CB750 that a serviceman bought in Japan and had it shipped home. When I got it it had been sitting for about 3 years. I used the Kreem system in the rusty tank and didn't have any problems with it. I suppose I lost a bit of volume seeing as the white "glue" looking last phase was almost a quart but on a 4.3 gallon tank it's not that much. Good Luck on bringing it back to life.

I now have an 08 SWing that I bought from my sister in Milton, FL. It sat under a tarp for 2 years. My son and I trailered it home and after some TLC and new parts(tires, battery, drive belt, etc.) it's now on the road again and running in tip top shape.
