Heated grips

Have the heated grips on my '02 SW,they worked when I tried them couple months ago but now it's cold they don't work.Is there a common problem with them?and easy to fix/replace

If they are Oxford grips, check the connections as they tend to get a little unreliable if left a few months without being used.
The other problem area is the controller, some have a bad reputation for reliability. The latest Oxford unit auto shuts off and also seems to be a better unit all together.
The grips rarely give a problem.
My best guess, the connections. Give them a wiggle

Believe they are Honda brand on bike from new,will have a fiddle with them/buy new ones,thought there might be a common fault/quick fix

Dave....I'm not familiar with the Honda grips. I have the latest Oxford grips with leds on the controller. Does your controller have leds ? If it does and they don't light it'll probably be a fuse or wiring problem.

Not led lights,turn a knob on left h/bar.Honda grips not available anymore but at £212+vat I'm glad lol.Will get some Oxfords if no joy .Do the Oxfords work well,looked at some today

The beauty of these ones is that you connect straight to the battery and the controller does all the work for you. It wont allow the battery to run dead if you leave them switched after the engine has stopped. Been using mine a lot lately.

my 08 has the oxford grips with the led grips, on it when i got it and been perfect, unusually when you switch on the ignition it comes on automatically at lowest level, it can be switched off but come back on when ignition switched on. Previously had oxfords with older style controller and did have problems.

Just install the Oxford grips on my '02 SWing. These are the tour model with the latest electronic controller. I have the wire directly to the battery as the controller must have a trembler switch to turn the grips off if the bike is stationary for a while. Rode today in 48 degree weather. Heated grips are nice! Mine came with a 20 Amp inline fuse. Probably more amperage than I will ever use as the grips were toasty at the lowest setting. When you're checking connections, you might check the fuse.

Dave I have honda grips that are the same as yours on my honda blackbird. My ones packed up and I found that the wires just outside of the grip had fractured with continual twisting of the throttle. Try pulling the wires and if they stretch that'll be the problem. There is a Honda dealership in Somerset called something or other Superbikes and they know the separate part numbers for each componant so you can just get the part you need. Having replaced it I've had no problems since and they work fine. On my Silverwing I have the Oxford grips with LED's and to be quite honest threw are better than the Honda ones and a full set will cost less than just one Honda grip. They get hotter quicker and auto turn off if you stop the engine!
When my Honda ones pack up I will change the lot. Why not wait till the bike show at the NEC and get the Oxford ones cheap! Oxford also sell each componant separately.

Don't know if the picture of my grip/heater is here? Fuse ok I fiddled around with wires and the work ok while ticking over in garage must be loose wire/earth.Do they get hotter the faster the revs

I have the Honda heated grips on my Silverwing and the Oxford ones on my PCX. I agree with others here in that the Oxford ones are hotter than the Honda ones and only cost about a third of the price!

The Oxfords don't have a trembler switch, they monitor the supply voltage and switch off if it drops below a certain level. The level seems quite low though so, whilst they will stop your battery going dead if left on, they will still have half discharged it. For this reason I wired mine through a relay to a switched live point so they turn off with the ignition.

The Honda one's go onto a sort of standby mode if the voltage drops (the leds flash when doing this) and then switch back on again when it rises back up. The voltage level when this happens is higher than the Oxford 'switch off' voltage so I feel the battery is protected a bit more. I also like the Honda control as it just has one button which cycles through the settings and is easy to use with gloves on and without looking. The Honda ones are also thermostatically controlled (apparently) so should hold a temperature better at the intermediate settings but I can't say I've noticed any evidence of this.

I think the Honda ones are more sophisticated than the Oxfords but the Oxfords are hotter.

If I was starting from scratch I would have the Oxfords on both bikes - that said I would prefer the Honda ones if only they were a bit hotter.

Here's an odd question (maybe it's implied?)  But do you wear all season gloves when using the oxfords?

I am down to about 20F here in CO while riding 30 mins to work about 70-85mph.  They only thing still cold on me is the fingers.  I have hand guards, 4 season gloves and silk glove liners.

Will it still get my digits super toasty though all the layers?

Um, no. But they'll be much more comfortable.

Well, that's a bummer. It's tolerable now - not like frostbite or unusable - just COLD!! But I'm hoping to at least have something more to keep them much more cozy. I love my gloves, so heated gloves are out. Are there such things as heated glove liners?

A quick search shows they do indeed exist! Now to find the thinnest and warmest ones I can find

My response was to the operative term "super toasty".

I'd go with the heated grips. So much less clumsy and more adaptable to varying conditions.

Well, I'm open to anything. Some background:

1) I have mild Reynaud's syndrome (circulation issues in extremities).
2) If my hands or feet are cold, so am I.
3) I've got all other body parts covered for warmth.
4) Even through winter gloves, silk glove liners and hand guards, they're still getting chilly - mostly in the fingertips and somewhat on the palms.
5) Any use of the brake levers makes the chill worse.
6) I don't have a tight grip on the handlebars (ie. I don't curly my fingers tightly around them).
7) I need something that heats up very quickly and transfers heat to the fingertips constantly.

So, which would be better?

Given those symptoms I'd have to say heated glove liners. Aerostich has "Luxry li-ion battery glove liners" #4448, or #5448, which have "heat panels that cover the entire glove back and wrap around each finger".

While I'm unable to locate these on-line, their most recent catalog lists them. Not cheap, but it sounds as if these will meet your needs.
