PostSubject: Mirror Extenders   Mirror Extenders I_icon_minitimeSun Feb 28, 2016 8:21 pm

I know this topic has been repeated often, but I just want to recommend adding mirror extenders as a "must do" upgrade. I had previously purchased some aftermarket mirrors that added about an inch extension and this was helpful.  I had also purchased some extenders off eBay that did not include the bolts and I had not yet purchased some stainless ones to fit so I decided to buy another set off Amazon. I found the ones sold by Gas Cap Dude and I received them Priority Mail in 3 days $17.99 plus shipping. Perfect fit, stainless bolts and WOW! what a great improvement!!! I just wish I had installed these last summer as they greatly increase the visibility that was previously blocked by my arms and shoulders.  I had even purchased a RiderScan mirror and was going to install this but the these mirror extenders I do not even think I will need this, much better rear view.

I highly recommend adding these if you have not done so.

Yes, the extenders are a great improvement and they are very inexpensive too. A great mod for the SWing. Thanks for posting.

I totally agree with Jeff.

I got some for Bob for his R1200GS for Christmas. They were not cheap. That's a BMW for you.

I just installed them on my scoot and the ride to work became a whole new experience to me affraid
I remembered how nice it was riding my Roadstar with 1m (39") wide beach bars on it. today was almost the same effect, mirror wise. It trully is a great mod.

Cheers,
Mad

I replaced my mirrors, did a video on this and used the extensions and I am glad I did no more shoulder view.

That was the first "mod" I did once I got my 08 SWing running a couple of years ago just because of comments on this forum. I love them! They "see" past my Givi top box and my shoulders and give me a great rear view.

I only wish it were easy to extend the mirrors on my C650GT. The mirrors are unique to that bike and don't make it easy to extend like you can on the SW. Pretty foolish design by BMW, their bikes usually have good mirrors. I do prefer them mounted to the body instead of the handlebars so I can see what's behind easier me when I push it backwards.

What length of extension have people found appropriate? (Will probably need to find different suppliers the UK side of the pond.)

Presumably we are talking about extenders that fit between the mirror stalks and their original mountings on the bars. Is that right?

Those look like the ones I had. There are several sellers around but I think they all come from the same Asian factory. They were nicely done and matched the stem color quite well. If I remember right they're about 1 1/2" extension and about 1/2" raise. Plenty enough to get your shoulders out of the view and short enough not to cause vibration in the mirrors.

Paul, I am sure you are right that they are all made in Taiwan and Thailand, and can be bought from there directly through Ebay for less than half the price inclusive freight.
For the price the gas-cap-dude charges I have bought a set of long stem mirrors from Thailand, which fit perfectly and in my view look better and are a better solution than using extenders.

I got the gascapdude extenders from EBay, intended for my 750 Shadow. I tried them on the SWing and they fit perfect, and did a good job of the rear view. They haven't come off. I am surprised by the amount of adjustment they provide for such small items.
In some positions, they may interfere with the larger windshields at full lock, but with my standard shield I haven't found any issues.
Jay.

The extensions did touch the GIVI Airflow I installed on a friend's bike but adjusting them and the stem to 1/4" clearance with the handlebar all the way over worked well. There are cleaner ways to solve the problem such as different mirrors but I didn't find the extensions ugly and they are a cheaper solution.
Different strokes....

2 Nuggets from my mod history:

1.  The Honda reflex mirrors are a little longer in the stem, and stick a little farther out.
In addition to the Honda mirror extenders which move the base outward and up, these are also an inexpensive way to add a little more to your mirrors.  They fit the same screw in base as the stock and the extenders. The reflex isn't sold everywhere, but its a sister bike to the FORZA and I believe they both use the same mirrors.

2. Its been a while so my memory is fuzzy but...  There is an adapter that goes in the same place as your mirror, (I think its 10mm) that changes the thread of the screw from Honda style to Harley Davidson Style.  Say what you want about HD, but there is a wider variety of choices of product to express your personality made for HD than Honda. Once you have the adapter you have a much larger variety of mirror choices, including ones that have electronic arrows in the glass, or LEDs on the bottom to act as additional turn signals.

Bicyclenut, just wondering what the mirrors and extensions you had on the Swing are worth. I found the brand on the web but cannot find the exact same mirror. ( I can't send pm's) zgoldwingman

I have the same set, and glad I did it, I installed turn signal mirrors on my SW after that and glad I did it, they work great.
