PostSubject: Plug performance   Plug performance I_icon_minitimeSun Sep 04, 2016 7:10 am

My leftover, purchased new 2013 SilverWing has now been in service 2 years, 36,000 miles.

Standard procedure for me=new bike, pull plugs, gap, put Never Seize on plug threads and ride.

Pulled the plugs @36,000 miles the other day, just to take a look, cleaned a little, re-gap, more Never Seize on threads----they may last the 50,000 miles I plan to keep bike.

Replacing at this point=waste of money. Still have easy starting and decent gas mileage. I have not looked at Air Cleaner......as hard to get at, but based on performance, everything fine.

I rarely if ever replace plugs on bikes any more now that there's no lead in the gas. No serious carbon build up without it. You can still get sooty plugs from running too rich but that's easy to clean off. The more serious wear on plugs is electrode erosion. When new the electrodes are sharp edged which concentrates the electrical field when voltage is applied. That means it takes less voltage to arc than a plug that has rounded edged electrodes from use. With electronic ignition there's more than enough voltage to arc across pretty well rounded electrodes. With the higher voltage now available and no lead in the gas plugs can last a long time. My normal plug check is to monitor my gas mileage, idle, and starting. If all three of those are normal I leave the plugs alone. My Mercury Grand Marquis had almost 200,000 miles on it's plugs. The mileage was the same as when new, it idled smooth as silk and started immediately. That's when I decided not of change plugs on specific miles traveled.

Aw c'mon Mr Grinsel, this post does not belong in "Introductions". It only takes a moment's thought to post in the correct forum. Please be more consentious about where you post your valued posts. Placing them in the wrong topic only renders them inaccessible in the future it also sets a poor example for our newer members who are trying to familiarize themselves with our format --but you already know that.

Your topic belongs in SILVERWING TOPICS and I've moved it there.

So why "poop in the hallway" and expect someone else to clean it up for you?

Tim

Why not make the forum/format simple or easy to understand?? People who worry about form/format are probably not out riding.
