| Hi Maggie, I think I found a place to camp for a few days and it's not that costly, $8.00 a night for 4 adults with free fire wood and it's only 24 miles from America's Best Value Inn 6602 S Lindbergh Blvd St Louis, MO. http://freecampsites.net/horseshoe-lake-state-park/ Have you heard of this place? Is it OK? If any one wants to split the $8.00 per night camping fee and share a campsite ...Please let me know. Sounds like fun and they are close to alot of fast food places, not more than 4 miles away. |

| How to say this nicely.... that is not the best neighborhood in the world. If there is good security cool.
Look at this map...
http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Oakville,+St.+Louis,+Missouri&ll=38.643691,-90.101624&spn=0.157404,0.363579&z=12
To the west you see Venice and Brooklyn? This is like the strip club capital of the world. OK, that might be an added bonus if you're a guy and like such. But with that comes drugs, robberies, car jacking etc. I sure would not want to ride that way at night.

| I've never been to that park before but there are some scary areas that border it... Places I wouldnt want to ride in the daylight even.... But on the plus side, there are some good stripclubs not too far away Edit..Maggie beat me to it! |

| A BUSA member suggested this spot:
http://stlouisrvpark.com/ This would be 15ish miles
Edited:
Again it is an urban location. IMHO not the safest area in St. Louis. Is it fenced in? |

| Ok this is from a camper as well as a man in our club that works for the Convention Center re the downtown camp place:
Probably safer than you think. It is entirely fenced in with good onsite security. Not the most scenic place since it for all intents for RV's. Some of the dealers use this site to stage their RV's prior to getting them in the Convention Center for the RV show. I've never heard of a bad report regarding crime in the park. Always seems to be motorhomes there year round.

| Bill,
Same hotel, I just booked directly off of the website.
www.americasbestvalueinn.com
Americas Best Value Inn, St. Louis / South 6602 S. Lindbergh Blvd 314.894.9449
The full stay is already completely paid for and if for some reason we don't show up I'm out the full amount. Not transferable, no stay - no joy!
I searched for best rate and did not use the scooter meet-up or military rate as a discount. _________________ Dale Huntsville, AL

| Started a thread re room sharing.
http://stlphins.com/slsc/index.php?topic=2448.0
Steve added this re rooms:
You can get a single queen room on-line for a couple bucks less than the club rate with AAA/Senior/Military etc. discount. Or you can first sign up for their "Value Card" and save even a couple more bucks. However, the club rate for the two queen room is still the better deal than any discounted rates and only $.50 more than the Value Card rate. There is also an even better rate if you pay up front (at least 14 days in advance), but but I don't know if this is refundable.

| Using Senior rate I was given a rate of $52.19 plus taxes... would I get a rate of $47 if I show a picture of me with a pretty young lady at my side..??? I am going to do a little bargaining before I make the reservations... not a big deal, but what else is an old man like me going to do with his time. |

| Gary (Opalsboy),
Yes she is a pretty young lady (beautiful even).
The key to my good rate was the 14 day advance purchase that Maggie alludes to. And, it is in fact not refundable. That did not deter me as I fully expect to be there. It is a single queen bed, non-smoking room, with no mini fridge or microwave. Could have opted for more amenities, but I'm a tight wad about certain things. I have a hard time with paying for too much decor when most of my time in the room will be with my eyes closed.
But, do dicker with the folks as I've read somewhere that interacting with the local hotel management can get you the best or at least a very good deal. They want the building full with all beds occupied. _________________ Dale Huntsville, AL

I received some comments from the http://stlphins.com/slsc forum ... based on their suggestions I have modified the route to http://tinyurl.com/yjcxyxa .
If I make the trip on one day (I have not made any decisions for this yet) it would be 980 miles ( 21 hours 22 minutes ) per Google maps ... I would have to be at the western entrance to the Talimena Scenic Drive at sunrise._________________ Bill - Georgetown TX 07 Silver Wing ABS Clearview w/vent, Givi E96/TB19/E52 with Admore Lighting, Alaskan Leather, Wrist Rests, 3M Solas tape, K&N air, Hyperpro spring, Grip Puppies, Airhawk, Utopia backrest, Stebel, Apexcone HIDs, StingerZ LEDs (w/Backoff WigWag), Knight Rider Sequential LED, NGK Iridium, Power Commander III, Manic Salamander, Saeng mirrors, Garmin Zumo 660, Dark-Side Sumitomo Tire |

| Sometimes when Kim and I are up against that type of a day, we try to figure out if it is possible and how to leave a bit earlier the day before. Have left after a full day of work to get a jump start - something to consider. Although we also like to start early in the morning. _________________ Dale Huntsville, AL

| How can you make a 900+ mile ride in one day? I made one 400 mile day once and it liked to have killed me. 300 or 350 is just about my daily limit. When Deb and I made the Colorado trip 3 days of about 300 miles per day let us ride and see some of the scenery each day. I know we could have made more miles/day, but the trip would not have been as enjoyable.
Rison to St Louis is about 400 miles. By car it is about 7 or 8 hours. Scoot should be about the same. I can do that. I have made the ride by car many times. This will be the first time by scooter. Gonna enjoy the ride. Bill, I think your route will take you through Morrilton. That is just a little out of my way, but I might meet up with you there if you decide to go that route. You route will go through a lot of scenic Arkansas. I would enjoy that. My younger daughter lives in Conway. I might spend the night there then meet up with you when you pass through Morrilton. |

I originally could only make ~300-400 miles ... then I added some gear that help me.
1) Grip puppies ( http://www.casporttouring.com/store/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=GPSMALL&Category_Code=grips )
Even with the grip puppies on a long run like this I will still ride with my Dr Scholl's gel inserts inside my gloves to reduce vibration even more.
2) Ear plugs ( http://www.earplugsonline.com )
Greatly help to reduce fatigue
3) Airhawk seat ( http://www.therohostore.com/Products/AIRHAWK-Seat-Cushion---Large-Cruiser-Seating-System-wCover__CRUISERLARGE.aspx ) under my Alaskan Sheepskin
The Airhawk is available elsewhere at cheaper prices.
I do not have the buttrest, so I have the large Airhawk. Before one of my largest contributors to discomfort on the 300-400 miles was seat discomfort ... I would have to do seat calisthenics to keep riding even over ~80-100 miles.
4) Utopia backrest ( http://www.utpr.com/silverwingnew.html )
The Utopia backrest helps greatly for the longer distances. I am able to ride with no back fatigue or discomfort. With the Utopia I can rest my entire body on the backrest and lift my butt off the seat which really helps ... like getting up in airplane and walking around every so often.
With some gear changes/additions I was able to achieve the longer rides.
To get to the western entrance of the Talimena Scenic Byway at 06:18 ... I will have to drive 309 interstate miles and 140 miles on secondary roads in the dark ... the 309 interstate miles are less of a concern for me. The biggest concern is the 140 miles on secondary roads (which I am investigating a remedy), I have traveled a majority of that road during the day.
After 449 miles in the dark ... then I can enjoy the rest of the day in some magnificent roads.
I did something like this on the way to Eureka Springs, Ar before, but only only drove interstate roads in the dark.

That would be great. When I ride with others I end up riding at their pace and their need for breaks.
On the way back was thinking some other very scenic MO and AR roads http://tinyurl.com/ydeaeup _________________ Bill - Georgetown TX 07 Silver Wing ABS Clearview w/vent, Givi E96/TB19/E52 with Admore Lighting, Alaskan Leather, Wrist Rests, 3M Solas tape, K&N air, Hyperpro spring, Grip Puppies, Airhawk, Utopia backrest, Stebel, Apexcone HIDs, StingerZ LEDs (w/Backoff WigWag), Knight Rider Sequential LED, NGK Iridium, Power Commander III, Manic Salamander, Saeng mirrors, Garmin Zumo 660, Dark-Side Sumitomo Tire |
