PostSubject: Reseating Shock Spring Tension Cam   Reseating Shock Spring Tension Cam I_icon_minitimeSat Oct 10, 2009 8:43 am

Hi All,

I just had an opportunity to assist in correcting a shock over adjustment on a Silverwing scooter. What happened is the 2 internal lugs came off the tensioning cam, that area between 5 and 1 that Honda warns about in the owners manual. Removing the rear Tupperware was a snap and removing the rear shocks was a simple procedure.

Shock repair as follows (takes 2 people): With shock removed from the scooter.

1. Turn shock over so the top end is on the bottom and set the shock end on the floor.

2. With two hands, compress shock spring about 1 1/2"

3. While spring is compressed, have the other person press the shock adjuster (the chrome part with holes) down and turn the adjuster to reseat lugs on cam.

4. Slowly let the shock spring extend back to the normal position.

5. Adjust shock from 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and then back 5, 4,......1 (never adjust shock by going from 5 directly to 1 or you will be taking your scooter apart again).

6. Reinstall shock and put scooter back together and test the lights.

DennisB, I assume that if a spring compressor was used then the job may actually be done alone?

Hi Waspie,

The shock spring is not that strong. Yes, you could use a spring compressor but it is not needed if someone helps you for just a couple of seconds.

Waspie,

Are you asking if it is possible to perform this task without removing the shock from the scoot by using a spring compressor?

I guess I'm asking that question.

Dale, I removed my tupperware to get the shock off for repairing it. I have looked at the shocks since returning home from the trip and it appears to me that if the spring compressor has the clearance to be used while on the bike, rethreading the shock should be easily done. The right side shock (the muffler side) looks like it might be the one that would present more of a problem of access. Once the spring was compressed, it only took a second or two to re screw the shock collar back on the tab.

The shock does not get screwed togeather or threaded on. All it takes is a 1/4 turn to reestablish the lugs onto the cam surface...that's all.

Thanks Dennis.
To an old non mechanical guy like me some of the 1/4 twists and turns in my life sure seemed like I was getting screwed. That may explain why I mis spoke in my statement.

I need to see a diagram or maybe when I actually have to replace a shock I will look at the mechanics involved in what you and I did. Maybe you or someone can do your magic and send me a crude diagram of the internal workings of the shock and its adjustment. I have looked in the service manual and it shows me nothing that helps me in that regard. There is no mention of adjustment of shock tension, only shock removal. No drawing or illustration of lugs or cams. To say there is not much help there is an understatement.

If any of you ever think you can't learn something from this forum, do a google on the term "LUG". Man have times changed in my 6 and a half decades.

Gary, if I can get a photo to load here, it might be what you want.

I have no idea what I'm missing, but the indicated button above does not provide a menu for me. Sorry.

Hi. I'm here again. I got it to upload to my personal album. It is fuzzy and black and white (after all, it is from a 1974 printed in Japan shop manual).

It seems that if I use Safari, not Firefox, this might work:

Wow Jon... that is exactly what I needed to see. Thanks a million for the pic. I owe u.
Gary

BTW... Colorado trip was great. I am in the process of getting the story together. You live in a beautiful state. Weather was gorgeous the three days we were there. I heard the snow started right after we left. We had over 200 miles of (somehow the word rain just seems like an understatement) RAIN. Would do it all again in a minute.

Gary,
I apologize for the poor quality of the photo. As I said on it, it was one of 7 small photos on the same page of a 35 year old shop manual that was printed in Japan. My scanner mangled it a bit; the scanner software didn't quite know what to do with a black and white and I don't have any fancy Photoshop-ish software to make it look better. Not only do I not want it, I want to make sure that any picture I put on the net is as close to the original as possible (for artistic integrity, if nothing else).

Thanks for the compliments on Colorado. 200 miles of RAIN? Must have been in either Kansas or Oklahoma, we never get RAIN in Colorado, LOL.

Regards,

Jon

We thought it had rained on us as we stopped at the Colorado/Kansas border to take a picture under the "Welcome to Colorado" sign. That was only a heavy dew. And that lasted less than an hour to La Junta. From there it was beautiful. Temperatures and skies were perfect. However on our return... we left Woodward, OK in a storm and it followed us all the way to Glenpool, OK. This was the mother of all rains I have ever experienced. It actually started in Woodward as a red mud rain. Never seen that before. Saw miles and miles of red mud, but at least it stopped falling from the sky. I am not being mean to all you Oklahomans, it was actually fun to say I survived that part of the trip. One last foot note... as we were riding along after three or four hours of that monsoon, I was thinking to myself... who is the woman sitting behind me, not complaining about the weather or anything... is this the same little woman that sits in my living room on my couch in 72 F temperatures and complains about it being too cool. I guess the next time she does that complaining I will just get the water hose and wet her down.
