| Okay.... Swing is back up and running at proper RPM and I've reset the V-Matic indicator and it also has stayed off so problem solved. The first thing I did after pulling off tupperware and covers was to start the bike and see if the belt was riding up to the top of the pulley and the belt did not. This told me that the issue was in the variator itself and not the belt. Once I pulled the variator off, I checked the sliders and they had not re-oriented/flipped or were in any way repositioned which I was kind of happy to see. What I did find, however, was a large amount of clutch dust that was compacted in the crevices of the variator. This was causing some of the sliders not to ride to the top of the ramp plate which would explain the increase in RPM and the belt not riding to the top of the pulley. The fix...........I used brake cleaner, a tooth brush, and a tooth pick (to removed compacted residue from corners that could not be removed with tooth brush) and thoroughly cleaned the variator. I then got a little crazy and got the dremel tool out with a polishing bit and some Simichrome and polished the faces of the variator where the sliders ride up just a bit. I bought a dry lube made by Dupont in a spray can and sold at Lowes and applied it to both the ramps and faces that the sliders come into contact with. Voila!!!! Bike is as good as ever. I believethis problem is most likely to occur with the Dr. Pulley Sliders as their is more surface area contacting the variator faces resulting in increased friction but probably not impossible with rollers either. This is something to check out if your V-Matic indicator pops on for no apparent reason AND... your RPM's have increased. |

| What is the advantage of the kevlar belt sold by Scooter Trap as the cost is 80% more than the stock belt.

The only advantage I saw with the Scooter Trap kevlar belt was that it never had any belt slap ... though my original OEM belt belt slap disappeared after a little while.
The Scooter Trap kevlar belt say to replace at same interval as OEM belt ... so it does not provide longer life per their recommendations.
Comparing the maximum mileage of the the belts from different owners would not be an exact apples-to-apples comparison ... because there are multiple factors driver characteristics, variator changes ... etc._________________ Bill - Georgetown TX 07 Silver Wing ABS Clearview w/vent, Givi E96/TB19/E52 with Admore Lighting, Alaskan Leather, Wrist Rests, 3M Solas tape, K&N air, Hyperpro spring, Grip Puppies, Airhawk, Utopia backrest, Stebel, Apexcone HIDs, StingerZ LEDs (w/Backoff WigWag), Knight Rider Sequential LED, NGK Iridium, Power Commander III, Manic Salamander, Saeng mirrors, Garmin Zumo 660, Dark-Side Sumitomo Tire |

| I agree with Ron and have repeated the results, this fix does work. For those that use the DrPulley sliders and you are having the V-light come on after or during some spirited riding it signals what Ron has described in his post at the top of this page. I found the same compacted dust build up then did a thorough cleaning and it is fine now. I used the Dupont lube when I first installed the sliders and agree that it makes everything smooth. Thanks Ron! |

| As noted earlier, I have the j-costa (which I didn't feel made that much of a difference) and my v-belt light comes on all the time. I stopped worrying about it a long time ago since it doesn't seem to mean much of anything. I had a new OEM belt put on the first time the light came on, about 4,000 miles ago, but now I just ignore the light. Have fun riding your SW and don't sweat the small stuff. |

| I went for a ride a couple days ago and watched the v light come on at exactly 16000 just as it was supposed to. I havn't pulled the cover off to see if the belt is o.k. yet as I feel it should run to 20000 with no problem. I did re set the light though. Before I make any long trips this next spring I will check it though. My question is....is there a pictoral on this forum for changing the belt? Old Dave in Western Nebraska USA |
