2002 FSC600 won't start - solved

I picked up a 2002 silver wing that had been sitting 3 years. The gent that sold it to me had new battery and plugs.
He had got it started, rode it to a gas station and used "Heet" in the fuel.. and the bike died on the way back from the station.

After an hour of dinking with it, I confirmed I had a decent spark, gas, and air..but I found that the plugs were dripping with gas.. even if I dried em off, put em back in, turned it over once.. then looked again at the plugs.. too much gas!

With the plugs out I see an unusual amount of gas come out of the plug holes when the motor was turned over. *careful if you ever do this.. use a rag to block potential spray of gas onto other parts of the bike!

The dripping spark plugs were a big clue, I found that the fuel pressure regulator is completely toast, gasoline is flooding a vacuum line that should be dry.

I clamped the vac line and turned the key.
The fuel pump fired up, and fuel shot into the vac hose to the point where it popped off the regulator! This had to be the problem.

Gas was flowing through the faulty gas pressure regulator into the vacuum line and being drawn into the carb air intake, "supplementing" the gas from the injectors and drowning the spark.

With the Vacuum line disconnected, I put a rag to soak up gas, turned the key and ignored the gas flowing out of the faulty pressure regulator, hit the starter, and the motor started right away.
This part is 16740-MCT-013 and around $60 in Hawaii, but I hope to have this machine on the road in a week.

Those fuel pressure regulators can be a real problem when the scooter sets for a long period of time. Happy you figured it out and that you'll be on the road soon.

Welcome to the site and it sounds like you know how to turn a wrench. You should ride the SWing up in the mountains, if you are on one of the islands with mountains. Tell us how you like the SWing after you get your part and able to ride. Thanks for the info.

It is very windy riding over the Koolau mountain, especially the Pali. The Ewa side of the H3 tunnel can be very windy and wet. I too have a 2002 Swing. I have had the Swing for about two months now, and added Airflow shield, power outlet in the left compartment, Admore lights to my top case, alarm, sliders, belt, and front running lights that I mounted on DennisB bracket. Also used Dennis's perfect connectors for the running lights, and the Admore lights.

I just want to say thank you to the original poster. He described a problem and posted the solution to the problem. Too often, we have people who request help, but are not considerate enough to follow up with a response informing the rest of us whether any of the suggestions solved their problem. That wastes the time of anyone nice enough to suggest a solution, and does not help anyone who has the same problem in the future.

I must have missed those posts.

In every thread I've read, the original poster is always grateful for the helpful advice they receive. I really like this forum (even though my postings have been rarer of late).
