There was some talk of this recently on this forum. I have just done an oil and filter change. Just for the hell of it while the sump plug was off, I made it into a magnetic plug.

Dead simple... I used a strong fridge magnet on the OUTSIDE of the plug and set it inside the concave portion. It was glued in with JB Weld (purely for the heat rating) and it's small enough not to interfere with any sockets used. The magnetic attraction is quite sufficient through the alloy plug.

While it was setting, I placed the sump plug over a large upturned bolt head so the magnetic attraction would pull the magnet down into the JB Weld.

JB Weld does have fine magnetic particles in it and these tend to shift around when setting over the magnet. However, I don't think it will impair the performance of the epoxy. If it comes loose, then it will just fall off the engine.

Good thinking, that should work. Normal magnetic plugs do NOT work on the SWings for obvious reasons. I have them on my Goldwing both oil and differential but neither has ever picked up any metal shavings so not sure if they are needed LOL. Of course, since aluminum is not magnetic...

Shocked magnetism can be transmitted through a non magnetic material Shocked how does that work then ?

Smile sure can, put a ferrous object on one side of a piece of glass put a magnet under it and you can move the object, works through aluminum too.

I like your  idea.  It could  possibly be better be putting another magnet on the inside of drain plug  2 magnets attract each other but one is in the oil. Find a magnet that will fit inside spring so it can't move or will stick to spring if lower one falls off.

I use magnetic drain plugs in everything I own. There is always something stuck on them, normal engine wear I guess. Filters don't catch everything but if its small it will stay suspended in oil not not really do any damage.

I bought a nice billet tappet cover made by J. Webster Designs $20 has a 17mm head. 01-002 part #
Was going to try to modify it with some kind of drain bolt but no luck so far. Still working on that searching to find something long enough to go through extra depth of tappet.

FFFFF winter.

How does the OEM spring & screen fit with the beefier billet tappet cover? Will the billet tappet cover clear the sump protector plate, or does it protrude below the sump plate?

Thanks for adding link.
I have yet to try and install this part. Photos make it look larger than it is.
So will spring fit??? It should judging from photos I've studied. Thickness of threaded area is similar to Honda plug. Diameter might be slightly larger uses a bigger O ring thicker. Protector plate can be modified if needed grind a little.

Depth is 3/4 inch threads to head so it will be a little lower than stock plug.

Many unanswered questions.
I've read a few other posts that similar parts XR400 tappet will fit and this will work for that engine.

I'll have to wait for a warmer day. 21F and falling.
