PostSubject: New REAR rim   New REAR rim I_icon_minitimeThu Oct 22, 2015 11:50 pm

Hello all in the U.S.
I know I have not been here in a while but I can use some
help? My REAR rim is bent from the ROUGH rds. in the Houston
Area. I had taken my bike to my brothers place to check the rear
tire and found  a staple of some sort was in the tire. and will
a patch on the inside of tire  seal that for good or not?
Also on inspection we noticed that the REAR RIM  is out of
shape bigtime cuz of the rds in this city.  Does anyone have
a NEW rear rim that they want to sell?? Or do you know
of a site that has a good price for the rear rim?  I called
wild west Honda today and they want $539.00 with tax. I have
checked on Ebay and found used ones. But my brother says
you can not really trust  all the sellers on ebay.. I even did a
a search on this forum for a new one. Can you give me the
part no as well?? My swing is a 2010 non  abs model.

I would not hesitate to buy one on Ebay, if the seller has good feedback. Paying with paypal makes it a pretty safe bet and all sellers want good feedback. But how did you manage to bend it in the first place? I thought we had rugged roads over here. With tyre pressure maintained at the correct level you would have to hit a pretty awkward object to bend the rear rim ( not quite as hard to bend the front one). It would be interesting to know if some of the guys like John Grinsel and Medrew, who both have done ..............miles have managed to bend one yet. affraid

Check out http://www.partzilla.com/  They show a new one for $337.00. I would hesitate to patch the rear tire. Howard

Well there ARE a lot of rds in the Houston area that do have POTHOLES even in the parking lots.
I am thinking it was bent from a combination of rd bumps that you can not feel in a car. And i hit
one pothole in a parking lot and i was only doing about 10 mph. The rear wheel took it the
hardest cuz it hit the deepest part of the hole.. I saw that darn thing a little to late no other
damage done

You can broaden your search ..... ABS rim will also fit yours bud, the only difference is the sector ring which you can remove easily if you want (4 little screws IIRC)

First new rim only.

Tire may be repaired from inside---tire professional only. new one best.

I have never hit anything hard enough to ben rim----Current SilverWing has been as far as Alaska. Previous Helix in Mexico=no wheel troubles.

I use 33 psi in tire----check every several days with gauge---kick everyday before riding.

You might look at car places that repair mag wheels.

Bottom line sounds to me like you rode on flat tire or serious deflated....and hit something

The outer part of the rim does NOT look bent at all. BUT once the wheel is rotating you can
easily see it. I just started noticing the tire being low on air 2 weeks ago. AND I have been
putting in 34 psi.. AND I have been keeping up on the air pressure. I DO NOT know where and when I picked up that staple or a very small nail???. The last rim that I bent was on my old 04 model swing and that DID ALOT more damage even to the handle bars. . That was on a city of Houston rd and that cement pothole BROKE my windscreen. That was 8 years ago.

Thanks to site adm nwssc for the link
also thanks to the bern
and John Grinsel
some of the potholes that I have seen ARE DEEP and the Houston area roadways ARE all
in bad shape and they have so much construction going on. AND I try to AVIOD going on the
roads that are NOT smooth enough

I would not be comfortable two wheeling on a patched tire. The cost of a new tire is also the price of peace of mind for me. Just sayin'....

Firstly, I agree tyre repairs should only ever be done from the inside.

Secondly, these rims CAN bend when hitting a pothole, even with the correct air pressure

I was riding in Birmingham last winter and as I followed a van onto the expressway I hit a massive pothole30 feet long and 3 or 4 inches deep I bent both wheels. We have a local company who straighten rims and they sorted them both I then had them powder coated and they have been fine ever since.

Adding----ever think riding technique? Rising slightly on seat and never ride directly into hole/defects.

I live in Chattanooga-----horrible third world streets and the people in charge waste money on bicycle paths/marking....instead of using my gas tax money on roadway repair.....idiots!

John, sadly not everyone is as experienced or as near a perfect rider as you think you are

Sorry I'm lost here Question why would a Silver wing rider need the services of a mag' wheel reparer Question Wheels on these use a cast aluminium alloy, thus they bend not break

I live in York-----where there's some very narrow Medieval cobbled streets, and the people in charge there seem anti-car and also waste money on cycle paths. But since I bought a push bike I use cycle paths whenever I can and riding alongside the River Ouse or the city walls with the splendour of York Minster in the background is a pleasure I never tire of. Cycle paths in Europe are fine....but here the idiots just put markers down on street. Given the way people drive in TN, not good idea. This week = one bicyclist killed by car near Chattanooga.

My '78 bicycle rests in garage----funny it worked in Italy/Germany/Japan/Korea but just too dangerous in TN.

Guys
I want to thank you for your assistance on this issue at hand. The rim is out of round and that
is getting taken care of. As well as the small nail or staple in the rear tire as well. Partzilla has the rim for my swing at $337.00 plus tax and shipping.
Thank you once again this group has been a BIG help to me and everyone else needing
help.

reason for suggesting a 'mag' wheel repairer will be that they can sometimes heat up a rim and take out a dent, had an alloy wheel off a megane that hit a pothole and to me looked like a write off but was fixed for £40.
