PostSubject: Any solutions to cover up the holes when the butt rest has been removed?   Any solutions to cover up the holes when the butt rest has been removed? I_icon_minitimeTue Feb 05, 2013 11:49 am

I finally took out the butt rest from the stock seat of the Silverwing and I am pretty happy with the result. I have more leg room and nothing hitting my back when riding over potholes etc. But the thing looks ugly. I temporarily put a small piece of black foam but I want to cover it more.

I am not interested in the back rest conversion and would like just a small cover, maybe padded, to make it look better. i recall someone was making one but never saw the final product. Any one has any data or knows of a product to use that can be bolted on the same holes that the support brackets for the butt rest go?

I would be interested in something like this as well. I'm loving the seat now without the butt-rest, but I haven't taken it on a long trip either.

Yeah, but duct tape is a little, how do we say... crude? Laughing

I am thinking to get a simple small padded cushion and screw it in where the holes are, just to cover it up in a bit nicer looking way.

How about a trip to an upholsterers and have them manufacture a insert!

Professional and permanent!

What's wrong with measuring the hole diameter and simply covering them with a couple of black rubber or plastic blanking grommets, blanking plugs, even better push in blanking fir tree plug, whatever you think fits best. They'll be almost unnoticeable once fitted.

Find a black ladies leather hand bag and make a rolled peace to fit in the hole and glew it from behind.

With the backrest removed, I use an Alaskan Sheepskn ( larger size then they suggest ) cover over it.

More comfortable and looks good.

Black leather buttons. Could be easily made to cover the holes using elastic to tie them both together.

Cheers,

It's not just that there are two holes that one can cover up. There are 4 round screw holes once you remove the buttrest and the two holders:

Two holes from the screws and two holes from the rivets. Then you have the holes where the metal rails of the buttrest slide in the seat and those are rectangular shaped and pretty large, see photo of the buttrest with these bars that go into the seat:

So in total there are 6 holes 2 of which are 1" wide and maybe 1/2" tall.

Ideally I would like to just put something shaped like the buttrest but a lot smaller so that it covers the area, look good and still give maybe a little support.

I would prefer something I can remove and put back in the stock part in case I want to sell the bike...

Not that I am planning to but who knows, maybe trade it in for the Super Silverwing once it produced... Smile

I must have had the Burgman 400 backrest in my head when I posted about the buttons.

Are the brackets on the buttrest removable? if so they could be used for fabricating a much thinner cover. Which in turn could be refitted to the original at trade in time.

Cheers,

Well I had an idea actually, and I will try it today as soon as I have a chance. I removed all the hardware from the butt rest and I will try to get it screwed on the seat just using the existing holes and existing screws. That should give me enough room I think.

Well it only shows when you're off the bike. Smile Sorry I couldn't resist.
I'd go with Waspie's suggestion. Take it to an upholsterer who does bike seat work. You'd most likely get good advice from a pro.

Actually I was able to fit the original butt rest without the brackets. I mean I removed all the extra parts from the seat and the butt rest and then using the original screws from the square metal that I think is supposed to make strengthen the butt rest, screwed it straight onto the seat. It looks normal but I got an extra inch or two of space. I will see what else I can do and take a couple of photos. I have to try it as well, I mean ride with it.

This post is worthless without pics!

I also removed the butt-rest and do not like the appearance it left behind. And what does an Alaskan sheep skin cover look like? Loose fitting??

Well, I removed all the hardware from the butt rest and the two plastic baket mounts you can see on the above posts. Then took the screws that were holding the rectangular plate to the butt rest and screw that through the seat and to the bottom threaded hole on the butt rest. The result is an inch or two more room on the seat which is welcome, the butt rest is still taking up some space but it feels better at this point.

if I had a spare one I could shave off some of the padding and make a little more space but will see after I ride it a bit. here is the photo, you can't see much other then it looks the same as before but you can see the extra space on the seat if you look at the base of the butt rest.

After I removed that butt-rest, it felt like a completely different bike. Much more comfortable, and I am only 5'10" I can only imagine a taller rider having to deal with that butt-rest on there.

I`m going to do something similar to what you have done, but I`m taking out the electric carving knife and carving up that foam...and recovering it with the original material.

Joe

Well, after all this I did another small change and added two small brackets to pull back and lift the butt rest a little bit, not much but enough to give it the maximum space and keep the stock parts.

Sorry I did not take photos of the in between actions but I hope this can still help:

Remove the hardware and use the threaded holes marked by the arrows to screw in the small brackets:

Brackets made about 2" long:

Remove hardware by drilling out the rivets in picture and then put through the holes the screws from the brackets as attached to the seat:

Result is that buttrest is back a couple of inches and higher a couple of inches too, giving the maximum amount of leg room available and keeping the stock looks, sorry for the poor photo quality:
