PostSubject: Tire Assistance   Tire Assistance I_icon_minitimeMon Feb 11, 2013 1:27 pm

I was on here back in August and got some recommendations to got o the Michelin tire for my SWing. I took it and it worked out that this tire is much better than the Dunlop OEM tires recommended from Honda. With the Dunlop I got maybe 2400 and with the Michelin I now have over 3000 and still going. But it is time to start searching for a new tire. I noticed that Michelin has another tire available called the Michelin City Grip Rear Tire. Has anyone tried this tire out yet? Or does anyone kn ow where I can go to compare these tires to the Pirelli and the Metzler tires? motorcycle

3K miles - what are you doing, spinning it against a rasp? Most people are looking for 8K to 10K

No idea of mileage but I have the Metzeler FeelFree Wintec tyres on mine, very happy with them. 2K miles so far and no sign of wear whatsoever.

Cheers,

I don't think the Michelin City Grip tires are available for the Silver Wing. I have a set on my Reflex and so far they are good, but I barely drive that bike any more so not sure of mileage.
The only Michelin tires that are listed on the Michelin website are the Power Pure SCs (they seemed to have discontinued the Pilots). I actually have a set of these sitting in my garage waiting for my next tire change in the spring.

yeah. I purchased my 06' SWing in Feb. 2010 with 958 miles on it. Since I have put on 4 back tires. I now have 14K on the bike. I am averaging about 3.5K per tire. I think it is the hot roads down here in S. Florida. I keep checking the air. It seems to always be right up there at the 36 - 40 pressure. It also might be my weight as I do weigh in at 260 right now and I was at 275 recently.

Thanx everyone. And yes that is my point. I keep replacing them and I know I am not getting the right wear out of them ... so I cana only figure that it must be the hot tar roads down here.

I'm at a little better than 9.5K on mine and fixing to change it out been using Bridgestone Hoops. I weigh 320 lbs wife around 180 lbs do a lot of two up riding, so I don't think your weight is the issue. I live in Southeast Texas and it tends to get on the warm side here also. Scratching head trying to figure out your problem. affraid

I think we (cyclists and scooterists) have gotten hosed. When I started driving in 1968; car tires lasted 20K if we were lucky. Now 40K is easily attainable and sometimes MUCH more.

On street bikes in the 1970's I figured roughly on 5K rear and 8-10K for the front. Again if I was lucky. Amazingly those figures are still about all we can hope for in 2013!? I guess technology has not caught up to two-wheeler tires? Price certainly has... Embarassed

PostSubject: Re: Tire Assistance   Tire Assistance I_icon_minitimeTue Feb 12, 2013 9:23 am

This is old subject----but adding---I have quite a bit of experience with the 13 and 14 inch tires that come standard on both SilverWing and Burgman 400. 2 Burgman 400's and one SilverWing 600 in my life all bought new---my take...I like to stick with makers tire recomendations. But.......tried matched set of Diablo on Burgman, bike felt so bad, I threw them away. They did work well on my ReFlex. strange but true (I know different sizes)

Hoops work fine on both bikes----but are different compound, probably because Burgman under stress handles much worse then SilverWing(rear weight bias/unspring rear wheel weight?)

But Hoop rears wear real square---has to bother cornering, period. Hoop on rear of my SilverWing replaced with IRC---another of the Honda recommended---worked great (2)
.
I get on scooters at least 8,000 miles rear, often 10,000-----used some 250-400 tires in the past 58 years.....and do own tire work! Balance is critical----most bike shops in US, don't/cannot balance small rear. I do have static wheel balancer---and like to check tires/wheel to see if they are round---do this on static stand---take tire back if not round.

For quite a while n0w have been using "Ride ON" @ $15 a bottle----well worth it as it balances and can seal minor leaks, from tacs/small nails. It keeps tire in constant balance and I think that adds to tread life.

I find FRONT Hoop on both scooters great tire----my current front

has 20,000 miles or more and it will stay on for run to Key West in next couple of weeks

Now is REAR. My long riding experience/safety degree, etc. tells me to stick with manufacturers tire recommendation as often bikes are developed around the tire....BUT Hoop Rears wear square for me and I like to lean safely-------NEW find---Michelin Power Pure SC, available in proper SilverWing sizes, my take on now maybe 8,000 on rear--they wear Round!!, seem to last, have not slipped in cooler winter temps, are round, smooth running and from Dennis Kirk last fall $50!! Will buy one again.

More---I stick with bike makers recomendations on inflation and do not overload. AND I am aware SilverWing and Burgman 400 are apples and oranges in power/power delivery.....Burgman ruffer,SilverWing smoother and more powerful---but these differnces probably make rear tire wear about equal in the end.

Thank you John,

I tried 3 sets of Hoops ... same result... 23 - 2500mi. Using the Michelin now and have 3,600 on it now and just now reaching the warning bars on the tread. So that is why I am looking now. I was given some advice to go with the Hercules Raptis TR1 155 70 13. This is a car tire. Anybody have any thoughts on this subject? He says I should get 40K on this tire seeing as it is a car tire.

Might be that the asphalt or concrete in your area is made with more abrasive sand. This '03 I recently purchased had about 5000 miles on the tires and they still look good. I've added about 1500 more miles and it looks like they'll last for another 3k or so. I used to get about 16,000 miles on the rear or a bit more on my Goldwing and around 24,000 miles on the front. I don't spare the whip either, I like the feeling of acceleration so the throttle gets twisted pretty well on any bike I ride. I'll try a pair of Hoops when these are ready to go, don't know if I'll like them or not Bridgestones weren't the best tire in the wet on my GW, it used to get pretty squirrelly if you were accelerating over white paint on a wet road.
