PostSubject: How to create link to specific post in thread?   Tue May 12, 2009 6:29 pm

I would like to point someone to a specific post within a thread for a pointer.

How can I create a link to a specific post in a thread?

I do not see anything I can click to create me a unique URL to a specific post (not just to the thread).

The URL for this thread is

http://www.silverwing600.com/tips-on-using-this-site-f8/how-to-create-link-to-specific-post-in-thread-t497.htm

However the label for your post is (to point specifically to your post)

http://www.silverwing600.com/tips-on-using-this-site-f8/how-to-create-link-to-specific-post-in-thread-t497.htm#3391

Notice the "#3391" on the end it points to a specific label within the URL.

So is there a button to create the URL and label together.

The only way I have been able to locate the label number is to quote the page and look at the URL at the end is "...&p=3391", then I have to manually create the URL and label myself. I was hoping for an easier way, since most people do not know this level detail for webpages.

The button that you require is 8th from left and will produce a link like this. Click here

Type or paste the URL in the top dialogue box and type the text you want readers to see in the lower box.

If you don't want to use the button you can type the BB code (leave out the blanks) [url ] http://www .silverwing600.com/tips-on-using-this-site-f8/how-to-create-link-to-specific-post-in-thread-t497.htm [/url ]

or [url = http://www .silverwing600.com/tips-on-using-this-site-f8/how-to-create-link-to-specific-post-in-thread-t497.htm] Click Here [ /url ]

Just re-read your post and realised that maybe it's the Quote button you need. Top right of the post.

If you
1) hit the quote button
2) copy the URL
3) paste the URL in a new tab or window

You will be brought back to quoted posting that you can reply to. The user could read the quoted post, but then they might accidentally post an unnecessary reply.

I just want to be able to point someone to a very specific post in a thread to read. Like I said, the HTTP standard allows for this via a "#label" appended to the URL ... I am looking for a click button to provide the correct URL with the "#label" for the post.

Bill,

It is early and I thought I'd look at this problem. I open a new window and find the post I want to link to then just copy the address. And then paste that copied address into the new message I'm posting or responding to.

http://www.silverwing600.com/silver-wing-accessories-modifications-f5/do-you-own-a-zumo-550-t406.htm#3727

This is not a simple solution, but it works.

Okay I tried this and - the result is - it works, but the link does not open a new browser window. So web location awareness is a must.

And, of course you knew this and were aware of how to post a link pointing to a specific post. I guess you are looking for a simple and easy way to capture the url for a specific post?

Dale if you right click on your link- in Firefox or IE8 - you have the option to open that link in a new window or new tab.

Well, well - I learned something new today. Thank you, it also works in IE7.

Yes. I know I can do it ... this is the only forum I have seen where I cannot get a quick link to a specific post and I was trying to make it easy for the non-technical members.

Firefox:

Click Tools->Options
Click Tabs
Under "New page should be opened in"
Select "a new tab"
